How about serving your country and honor? Patriotism? Geez... either people can't wait to get out or all they care about is the benefits.
When I graduated high school I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. Rather than wasting time and money on school (to me it seemed like a waste to just go for the sake of going, without having any kind of direction...), it seemed like a noble idea to enlist in the military. I was aware of all the great things the military has to offer (great training, good benefits, excellent qualitity of life--AF!, etc.) and I do appreciate all of those things.
Maybe I am just old fashioned, but at 27 years old, it gives me a lot of pride to be able to serve my country and feel that I really make a difference... my service has changed my life, my family's life, and the things I've done while serving have hopefully affected a lot of other people as well (I think they have but sometimes it is hard to make that kind of judgment).
And for those that say getting out gives you "freedom"? I think enlisting gave me freedom! How many other 18 year olds are completely independant (able to live on their own without help from Mom and Dad) and are put in charge of operating multi-million dollar equipment? How many 18 year olds are potentially responsible for the lives of thousands of people?
I have made the best friends ever-- I barely keep in touch with friends from high school and when we do talk, it's awkward. I can go years without talking to a military buddy, and when I run into them halfway across the world, it's like we were never seperated!
Also, the military sent me to Texas (originally seemed like a bad thing...) but that was where I met my husband-to-be, so it turned out to be another great benefit of my service.

From an Army wife's perspective: Knowing that all of our needs are taken care of...from medical care (I have had good experience with our care here), housing, etc. But also, knowing that if I need anything, there are people here to take care of it. ACS is there, AER loans if needed, and then all the people around me that would lend a hand if needed.
Husband says that knowing he is serving the country he loves is the best part. He says it is run by the second best president ever, second to Ron Reagan. I will keep my opinions of George Dubya to myself in respect to my husband.

The best part is knowing that you are taking an active part in making sure that your children can wake up tomorrow and be free.
I take pride in knowing that I am a defender of freedom and the American way of life.
Soldiers have the duty to protect all Americans from the evil powers in this world that want you dead because you are free. That is a true honor.

well the guy above me stated it great. the really long answer. but i think the best part is finishing a work day and having liberty where you can do wahtever the heck that you want. i.e. goto the movies, work out, meet new friends, etc... another great part is that you get to meet thousands of new people in your naval career or wahtever branch that you are in. regardless you do get liberty time and liberty is the best thing. and there is also leave. leave is also great especially after being in the navy since june and not getting to take it till december. which we got like 2 and a half weeks for leave for the holidays. and i took them all. being homewith family and just even the simple pleasures that everyone takes advantage of such as just sleeping in your own bed after 6 months of sleeping in a strange bed in your barracks room. well thats all i have.
i'm a MTSN (E-3) on submarines in the best navy in the world. and i've been in since june 26th of 2006.

Besides the benefits, the experience, the training , the friends, the honor, the college money, the guranteed pay check, the free medical coverage, free tuition assistance, free shelter, free travel, and getting to wear a uniform that symbolizes the great United States.... Besides all that..... When you finish your service... You know that you just accomplished and fulfilled one of the most courageous jobs that you've ever had, and have a PRIDE that only other military veterans can understand and feel.

Speaking as an ex army wife, I'd have to say the comraderie, the "free" housing and health care, although the health care was well below the quality of private care... maybe you should just ignore the the health care part. :P
