It's the best player because it is easy to use and does not require additional codecs to be downloaded. It is also very versitale allowing for almost any audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

Because most sp'eds claim "Get VLC - its all you need with no codecs!!!!"

Which is a load of bull. It is a decent player that uses little system resources and also HAPPENS TO HAVE ALL THE CODECS SUPPLIED WITH IT WHEN YOU INSTALL!!!!
(that's for the sp'eds who don't know any different).

From VLC's own wiki:

"check if you have downloaded and installed all the codecs correctly"

Because it supports next to all formats and it is really easy to use. In addition, if you are downloading a video it can play it even if it is not complete.
