a land line is a telephone that is brought to your home over copper, or fiber optic cable, provided by the RBOC (Regional Bell Operating Company, think Verizon etc)
These lines may be billed to you directly from the RBOC, or you may choose a local carrier of your choice, who leases and resells the lines to you.

The Dial tone is created at the switch either a DMS or a soft switch, which may be owned and maintained by the RBOC, or the local provider which you recieve your bill from

We're using Telecom landline at the moment and it's all goods. But i'm a Vodafone customer and proud of it.
