There is no one Buddha. The Buddha you're thinking of is Guatama Buddha. He was the Buddha who the Hindus claim was a manifestation of Vishnu AKA God and was the founder of Buddhism. However, anybody who has experienced the state of "Nirvana" is called a "Buddha". Thus, there were/are millions of Buddhas out there. Some were fat (as you say that Hindus make them) and some were not.

It is the Chinese Buddha who are normally fat and there is no such a thing as Hindu Buddha except for the Buddhist Indians. Hindu is a religion different from Buddhism, Hindi is how Indians are called. And the fat Buddha represents wealth and abundance.

The Chinese statues of Buddha that I see show him as fat and jolly, while the Indonesian ones show him as thin and more dignified. I think it's just a cultural art thing, especially since Buddha is more of a title than an actual person.

Wha-? I think you're referring to depictions of the alleged Buddha to come... and that's not Hindu that I'm aware of. I've never seen Hindus depict the Buddha as "fat".
