Should i buy the convertible one (3 in 1) as i am pregnant with my second baby, and due in early October. I already have a 10-month old girl. If i buy the convertible one, then i wont have to buy the booster seat later on, and my second baby could use the same seat. But then i was told by a friend that the kids dont like to sit in this seat when they grow up since other kids make fun of them, and they want the booster seat. Please give me your advise. Thanks!

I WOULD buy a convertible, but NOT a 3-in-1. You want to rear-face your children for as long as possible, it is safest and now recommended by the AAP. If you're looking for something with longer usability, I would highly recommend one of the Britax convertibles, or the Sunshine Kids Radian, or the new Recaro convertible (due out in June). This is especially true if your daughter is in the higher percentiles for weight and height. All 3 convertibles have high forward-facing harness slots (17" - 19"), and will last the longest. They also have high forward-facing weight limit - 65 for Britax, 65/80 for SK Radian, 70 estimated for Recaro. Rear-facing weight limits for these seats are 33lbs.

Most other convertibles on the market have 40-lb forward-facing weight limits, and shorter harness heights. Some of them DO have 35-lb rear-facing weight limits, which is nice for younger & heavier infants & toddlers (my son was 95th percentile on both until about 18 months). The Eddie Bauer or Cosco 3-in-1 seats rear-face to 35lbs, but only forward-face to 40lbs, then converts to a booster up to 100lbs.

Forward-facing children must have the harness at or above their shoulders, and they usually outgrow "regular" harness height convertibles before they meet the weight limit. My son outgrew the Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 in harness mode (his shoulders were above the top harness slots for forward-facing) at 2.5, which was way too young for using it in booster mode. By comparison, he's still in his Britax Marathon at 4.

Also, most carseats expire 6 years from date of manufacture (not when you bought it). Buy one that you can get full use out of. When dd1 outgrows the convertible, hand it down to her younger sibling, and buy dd1 a new seat or booster, depending on how old she is then, how much she weighs, and how tall she is.

If you have more questions, check out www.car-seat.org. There are quite a few child passenger safety technicians on the forum who will be happy to help in any way they can. hth!

Here's my suggestions
buy the following seat Eddie Bauer High Back Booster Seat it cost around $120 and let your 10 month old use it (she will be 15 month old) old enough for her to use it. This seat will turn into a booster seat just like you want it. But it looks like you still have to buy another carseat a 3-in-1 or any convertible carseat for your soon to be here baby. One your kids know that he/she is safe that's all that matters also you have a long ways to go.

A booster with a back that has a five point harness is a million times safer than a back-less "seat belt positioning" booster. However really it is up to you and remember if your child ends up uncomfortable in the seat you buy a few years from now, you will change it. Sure you'd like to avoid it, but there is no way to predict the future.

Don't buy for the convenience, buy for safety. I've never heard of a kid making fun of another kid in a car seat. The five point harness was the safest when my daughter was born. But do some research online or call a baby store to find out what the safest carseat is and stick with that one.
