Try to get a ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) scholarship. I just received an Air Force ROTC scholarship for $15,000/year. After you finish college and ROTC (classes in college and a summer of basic training), you receive a commission in the Air Force (or army, if you choose that ROTC).
You do have to be a very good student to get a scholarship to train to be an officer in the military, so it is nothing to be ashamed of. If you desire to serve your country for a few years, than by all means, go for it. My mother had pretty much the same reaction yours did, but backed off when she saw this was what I wanted. Realizing that would help pay for college helped a lot too. After college, you only have a four-year commitment, then you can do whatever you want.

Good luck! Aim for your dreams!

Does she think that you're throwing your life away or that you're wasting your intelligence if you join the military? If so, that's pretty sad. The military could use all the brains it can get.
The military can be a great place to get training for a career, or to serve your country, or to earn money for college. But it's not for everybody, and you should speak with several recruiters from every branch you are considering to make sure it's the right choice for you.
Yes, you can join the military after high school. However, my recommendation is to go to college and get a degree; you can always join afterwards; also, you can enroll in an ROTC program, giving you the opportunity to become an officer when you graduate. Additionally, there is always West Point, Annapolis, and Colorado Springs.
The bottom line is that you need to be honest with yourself about WHY you want to join the military. If you're not prepared to risk your life, then the military doesn't need you.

Honestley, only you know the answer to this question...no one else, not your mom, or any of us. But what I could tell you is this. Follow your dreams! Where do you see yourself 5-10 years from now? Joining the military has it's pros and cons. Joining the military isn't a bad thing, but they do own you for as long as your enlisted. If you're think ing of joining the military I think you'll be best in the USAF! Because you're a smart person and they are not in combat as much as the Army! I'm am married into the military and it's not easy. My husband is in the Marine's and it's tough for me when he is gone...so I can imagine what your mother will go through if and when you have to deploy. It affects your family members too. At the same time your family will have this sense of pride for you because you are serving your country. Don't let your intelligence go to waste. you can go to school and be in the military at the same time and they will pay for your school! If you go to school and graduate and them join the military...you can automatically become an Officer depending in what branch you choose to join. If I can give you the best peice of advice...I'd say join if only you really want to join.....but join the Air Force! The toughest/dangerous branches are listed as follows:
US Marines (First to fight)
US Army
US Navy
US Air Force
US National Guard
US Coast Guard
Good Luck! You're a grown man....you're old enough to make decisions on your own and only you know the answer to your question!

I was a straight A student. Test in the top 1-2% on ACT and SAT. Scored perfect on the ASVAB and was a senior in college when I joined. I didn't do it for money or for college benefit, I joined because we were at war - I believe war is a necessary evil - and I felt it was my duty.
War isn't just for the dumb (John Kerry) and it isn't just for the poor. Why does your mom think that you are any better than the next kid that joins? Why is their life worth less? Those are a few of my mom reactions when other parents talk about how they couldn't let their kids join.
I didn't have to join, I wanted to. I have nothing against the USAF, probably would have been a better intellectual fit for me. But the Army has a lot to offer as well.
Join either because you fell the call to serve our great nation. And really ask you mom why your life isn't worth the risk of our nation security. Freedom at any price is a bargain.

I say that only YOU can decide this question. The army needs as many good troops that it can get. I was somewhat like that way back when. I was good at school (3.5 GPA) and was thinking of the Military. I was concerned that the Army would be tough. (I was a bookish kind of guy, full of Hollywierd movies and such) Well I tell you what, If I could make it and thrive in the Army I am sure anyone can. Just put your Heart into it. (I am glad too. College is such a breeze for me. It may sound corny but the discipline really helps!)

With the way the world is going today all these young mean dying in a war for a cause they don't understand I say "NO" if you are a straight A student and want to serve your country take it to the next level and use those smarts to become President because Lord knows we need a smart one or put yourself in a posisiton where your ideas can be heard. We have enough people dying right now for someone else ego these are mostly young men who didn't have any other path but the military. Pick your battles you can be there or you can be here furthuring your education to be something better and probably make this shitty world a better place. If you really wanna join the USAF there's always a chance you'll be drafted Bush still has some time left in the White House!

I just enlisted in the army a few months. I'm in my 3rd year of college and have always been a student but I never really figured out what I wanted to with my life. I wish I would have the decision to enlist straight out of HS.
I originally tried joining the AF however I have pectus excavatum ( a chest deformation) and they would not give me a waiver. After looking closer at the Army I realized they had many more jobs and better bonuses so I decided to go to them. And I knew the army gives out more waivers.
I really can't tell you which is better because it just depends on yourself. Some ppl like the Army better and others like the AF. Just check out the recuiting websites (http://www.goarmy.com http://www.airforce.com) and familiarize with what each has to offer and then talk to recruiters with both branches. Then make your own decision about which join.
Also if you choose the army you could go to school first and do ROTC so you can be commisioned as a officer in the army after college. Or you can just get your degree and go through officer training in the AF.

If you really want to join the AF, why not go for an AFROTC scholarship? With your grades, I'm sure you'll no trouble getting a scholarship or something. Look around for a university that has both an area of study you'd like to pursue and an AFROTC program.
BTW: Go Air Force. They treat their people better. (Based on personal and family experience.)

The Army offers more programs than you can think of to help you get to where you want to in life: Money for college, training, expierience---all the things that will help you succeed in college and in life if you decide to go that route once you complete your first enlistment. I would suggest you talk to a recruiter in your area about the programs that you qualify for (once you turn 17) and see what there is available.
Seriously, but, you will have to make your own decision, consider your mother's advice also
