That is not repent in the human sense. He had given a conditional statement and the humans changed the conditions which led God to act differently in terms of the conditional statement.

IF (condition) then (result)... The residents of Nineveh CHANGED their condition and God relented from the punishment he had planned for them, thus a different result.

This was no real change in God; rather, the object of His threatening was, that He might not do what He threatened. God’s threatenings are conditional, “unless they repent,” as are His promises, “if they endure to the end” Mat_10:22.

The people of Ninevah repented and God didn't do what he had said he would do before they repented. That's what repentance means. His actions were the outcome of their's. God doesn't change or turn, we do and then God acts on what we do.

"When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened." (Jonah 3:10)

The people of Nineveh repented.
God was going to destroy the city, but changed His mind when they turned from their evil ways.

He didn't repent, He changed His mind

10And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God revoked His [sentence of] evil that He had said that He would do to them and He did not do it [for He was comforted and eased concerning them].

God changes his mind all the time...

That's why he prefers the Freethinkers, Unitarians, and Pagans at the moment.
