i have just been sent a e/mail telling me i have won a lot of money on the yahoo lottery,and want to know if its genuine or not

Yahoo does not run a lottery. It is a scam. Avoid.

No it is a scam
all lottery winning notification by E-mail is a scam
Do not respond, just delete it.
