How do you fish for catfish in rivers? Also how do you pinpoint a good location to fish at? Any tips would be nice.

Fishing for catfish in rivers is very much like lake fishing for tem. se the same kinds of bait. Look for drop-offs and fish at the edge or just below the edge of the drop off.

Areas downstream of log piles are good but be prepared for the hang-ups.

personnel experience...............i fish quite a bit in the ohio ruver for catfish.
we fish from a boat, but we fish from being tied to the bank.
we fish at the mouths of creeks.dropping our line straight to the creek channel.normally we do not have to cast over 10'.
also we fish just to the down current sides of barge tieoffs.
u can fish just below any stumps or laydowns.the fish will normally be laying in the slack water caused by the laydowns.
also u can try the inside egde of a bend in the river where the current is less.

as far as bait goes,we catch bluegill and shad.seems to be the best natural bait for the catfish.just remember to cut the heads off the bait to allow the blood to flow.

when fishing in the river u do not have to sit on one place to long.usually no longer than 10-15 minutes.if the fish are there they will bite,if they are not there they will not.

its pretty much like a lale but you have to keep in mind the current and all the snage. Catfishing in a river you usually have to fish on the bottom. Fish with natrual bait found in the water.

I know alot of people who fish for catfish at night. Throw in areas near the shore with shade and some vegetation. Use crickets or worms.

trot lines and set hooks.....i make a "trot line" not sure why its called that but anyway...lets say you have a line that is 20 feet long...you weight one end and then in the middle you place another line and hook baited with stinkbait or worms every 2 ft or so...then you attach the line to a pole or tree and throw the weighted end across the river, check back the next morning....set hook, just a simple pole or tree tied line placed in the water with sb or worms, check back in the evening or next morning.....enjoy
