hey i just started track. I'm a junior in highschool and i'm a good athlete but i'm way behind as far as being in shape because everyone else has been practicing for a while now, they've even had indoor winter meets. I'm doing sprints so it shouldnt take me too long to get into good enough shape to compete. I was wondering if anyone had any tips as far as nutrition or anything else, and please dont just say run more because ill be practining everyday so thats basically an impossibility. I've been on a high protein diet and working out a lot lately and im wondering if that would be good for sprints or if i should be doing something else.

Protein is great for running, but make sure you don't miss out on other necessary nutrients as well. Bananas, whole grains, and dark green vegetables are all also great for runners. As a sprinter, a big part of your race is strength. It sounds like you have been putting in a lot of effort, which is great. Make sure you have one rest day every week, so your body can recharge itself. Also, hills are great for strength.
Good luck, and remember to enjoy yourself!

First you need to ask yourself if you want to stay with sprints or go with something longer or do a field event.

We'll use Michael Johnson for an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIQ5S3TqgP0

Here's his video of him in the 1996 Olympics when he broke the world record in the 200m. Look at his form, look at his body.

Form is everything in sprints. It's the difference from first and second potentially. Making sure you expend your energy into something beneficial, running faster, and not eating track. You can always work on your form. In high school we would have people video tape us and work on our form.

Block work is very important too. It can make or break you in a race. You can work on that on your own as well.

Making sure you are running on your toes at all times during the race.

Lastly plyometrics can help you with your quickness and overall explosion. Here's a website for some example workouts: http://www.tflinks.com/articles/training/a001.shtml?2

Focus on the things you can control and work on off the track and the rest will come your way. That way when you get in shape you wont be compensating with your speed you'll already have the form and block work down and will be that much better in the long run.

Add carbohydrates to your high-protien diet. If you're working out 5 days a week or so, eat every time you get hungry. Any weight you gain will be good weight.

Drink a lot of water. NEVER drink soda pop. Stuff puts CO2 in you, and no athlete needs that.

Sprinters under-use drills that involve jumping. Box jumps or anything like that will make your stride more explosive, which will make you faster.

thats a good question... i am an eighth grader and i am the best at my school in long distance. but the best advice i can offer is keep doing what you doing and you can maybe even try to do some over distance workouts so that your endurance builds up. that is good no matter how short the distance!!!

the day of eat things with peanut butter, it gives you energy but not a "down" from all the sugar. the night b/f eat pasta as reserved energy. eating fruits and veges will also help. at all costs stay away from anything with sugar as the main ingredient

Don't run everyday cause your body needs rest,so just run 2 days then rest a day.Working out is best for long distance running.
