When I was at Virgin megastores on Saturday, I needed some information so I asked a black guy who was working there.

I said "Hey Tyrone I could use some help here". The black guy wasn't too happy with that and started accusing me of racism. I explained that Tyrone is a common black name and it was just meant as a joke. The black guy then went on a rant about slavery and how blacks are going to exact revenge on whites in the near future by making whites their slaves. Needless to say he refused to help me.

All because I said: "Hey Tyrone".

Look, You have no idea what this guy's life experience is like or where he comes from. Maybe there was more to is response than "just because said: Hey Tyrone"

Though I think his going off on slavery and revenge is a little wacked maybe he has had something much more direct and personal happen in his life. You have no idea if that guy had been racially harassed or attacked. Those of us who have been the victims of actual tangable racism don't find it funny when some stranger comes up makes a racist comment.

Have you ever been only person of your race somewhere like a party, and had everyone suddenly assualt you with words or blows? I have. It's not fun it's not funny, it's scary as all hell. And no matter how big, strong you become. You feel powerless and paniced.

Maybe you've never had your life threatened by a someone commiting a hate crime against, in fact I hope you haven't. But your experience is NOT the same as everyone elses.
I've been assualted by racists, verbally and physically, both as a child and as an adult. And when someone like you says something like that, I have all those same emotions come flooding back. Because while you may know your joking, the person you are talking to dosen't. And they have to decide weather or not you are goign to threaten their life.

yes it is that serious. you know what the difference is between you and the guys who commit hate crimes?
The way you think, and no one else can see the way you think. So if someone I never met starts flinging racial slurs my way I can't afford to assume he's joking, it may be the last assumption I ever make.

Despite the fact that this guy may not be all their he probably had every right to be so pissed.

If it was me I would have said "how's it feel to want?" and walked away.

WEll am black, and i hate it when black people are so quick to play the race card at ridiculous times, however,.....
----You were just rude. You strike me as one of those sarcastic people who don't think before speaking. Not everyone appreciates sarcasim. It was rude and disrespectful for you to have said "Hey Tyrone I could use some help here." all you had to do was drag your behind to were he was and you could have avoided the whole mess.
~How would you have feel if you were a sales associate at some store and some one comes to your work place and says "Hey Bob i could use some help here,'' knowing full well that bob was not your name, but felt it was ok to call you Bob because he thought Bob is a common caucasia name?

Why shouldn't he get in the face of a dumb-*** hick such as yourself? Was his name Tyrone? No. People get offended when others try to paint them w. the same broad brush. Especially if it's an attempt to put them in a negative light. Even more so if they have to put up with that crap all the time.

You shouldn't just crack jokes with people you don't know. Anyone could take offense if you come asking them for help calling them a name that is trademark of their race. When you try to make jokes at others' expense then a lot of times you're not going to get a positive response. Make "Tyrone" jokes with your friends, not with random people you don't know.

Why did you have to go with the Hey Tyrone? Why dodn't you just say "excuse me" ? Most people with any common sense do it.

You are a tool! Don't generalize by calling people of color that! What the hell is wrong with you? What if he yelled out "Hey cracker......"?

It's not 'black' people that get offended so easily, it's people in general not using common sense and respect when talking to each other. Just because it didn't offend you or wouldn't if the situation were reversed, doesn't mean it didn't offend him.

Manners.......they're not just for special occasions!

Man, your lucky that this person didn't put a shoe in your back side. I would have had the same reaction. For future references, Try using, "Excuse me sir or ma'am." It sounds a whole lot nicer and it will keep you of trouble.
