Whilst the ice cream is melted it's picking up airborne bacteria, which will still be there when you freeze and defrost again. The ice cream is an excellent medium for the bacteria to grow and to release toxins, which can cause at least some tummy upset.

The only reason it can definetely be said its bad is because the ice cream will lose its air which is what made it so light and creamy (achieved by churning it during freezing). If you re-freeze it it will be solid. IT IS SAFE TO EAT if it does not stay above 41 degrees fahrenheit for more than a total of 4 hours ( either in one setting, or over multiple re-heatings and coolings). This is in line with true food safety rules.

Once you melt the ice cream, all the air that was incorporated during the turn and freezing stations is gone. (deflates) and you end up with a drinkable drink and if you refreeze it, it will be one solid piece.

I defrosted mine by mistake most have been lucky has I refroze it then ate it a few days later & I did not get a bad stomach or any other side effects.

YOU SHOULDNT DO THIS FOR TWO REASONS THE FIRST IS ONCE THE ICECREAM HAS DEFROSTED THE CXONSTITUTES OF IT CHANGE AND THATS WHY YOU GET THE REALLY ICY EFFECT ALSO OBVIOUSLY AS THE ICECREAM DEFROSTS IT GETS WARMER ALLOWING ANY DORMANT BACTERIA TO BECOME ACTIVE AND THIS WOULDNT BE VERY GOOD FOR YOUR STOMACH
