One,he can eat a whole bar.
Two,he doesn't deserve privileges as long as he indulges in disrespecting his mother.
That means no Game Boy,no outings after school,no clubs or extracurricular activities, maybe no TV or computer either.EACH TIME HE FORGETS HIS MANNERS,HE NEEDS TO EXPERIENCE CONSEQUENCES.
Nowadays it's politically incorrect to physically punish a child but sometimes I feel a discreet whuppin' might do rude children a world of good..oh well...

Sure, if you want a swearing, puking kid who hates his parents. I think the bar of soap thing is an antiquated punishment that doesn't really work. Also, other cutesy ideas like a jar you have to put a quarter in every time you swear doesn't work either. I think the little guy needs you to get right in his face and whisper in a growl-y tone that if you ever hear him use that word towards anyone, especially his mother, ever again, you will give him a jolly good spanking.

There is only one thing that would make me hit my child hard and that would be to swear at me or their Mother. I let them know up front and at an early age this would not happen as they would pick their self up off the floor. My reaction would be so quick that I wouldn't have time to think and we both may be sorry, but still it wasn't going to happen and didn't. This is something I would not stand for and they would find a bar of soap would be better than what I would give them. Sound like you have a problem and you didn't state the child's age, but you need to deal with it quick and hard if necessary as they need to understand this not acceptable behavior.
But then what kind of language are you using in from of your child?

Yeah, eating soap at TWO years old is abusive. They are too young to even understand the implications of swear words at this age. You need to sit him down and talk to hima nd use punishments that are suitable for his age! Making him eat soap is only going to confuse him more and you are going to f@#$ him up for life, if you know what I'm saying.

Do not make him eat soap, take things away or give time out or corner time works well. I do not think it is healthy to make them eat soap and certainly not half a bar. you did not state his age, but take away something everytime he does it and dont let him have them back until he has gone X amount of days without swearing at her, and be sure he apologizes to her also.

I was raised the same way and I can say it only took me talking back to my grandmother once and her washing my mouth out with shaving cream to break that up. I wouldn't make him EAT the soap though. Also if he is your son then wouldn't you be the one he is swearing at?

Errr even making him eat soap is a reward, you're giving him attention and spending time with him.
Time outs are best, get him to take a time out and stick to it, maybe make him stay in a room for 1/2 hour for doing it. The behaviour will die FAST. He's looking for boundaries so set them. Then give him attention when he does good, never give him attention when he's bad.
We're social creatures, use that to train him to be a better person.

Gee, that never happend in my family. Of course, I was well "educated" with the 40" of leather that held his pants up too.
I turned out just fine, and I was swatted.
It's not "abuse" you goodie two shoe people. Believe it or not, there's a difference. If the belt hit my back...ok yes, that would be excessive. But a couple of shots across the backside, I was back on the straight and narrow.
The kid needs a whoopin'
