Identify all of the adverbs. Then, indicate the word each adverb modifies.

1. A glow just barely appears on the northern horizon.
2. Lights move unexpectedly fast across the sky.
3. A glowing curtain of light forms more cearly.
4. It arches father forward.
5. It swirls and dances somewhat closer to the Earth.
6. I watch very quietly in awe.
7. I have only just comprehended the beauty of the night sky.
8. The light starts to move more quickly away from us.
9. The glow is almost completely gone.
10. The Northern Lights will never completely disappear from my memory.

My problem is recognizing the adjectives. For example, in #2, is "fast" an adj. or adv.? I think it's an adverb, because "move" is not a linking verb nor a sense verb. Is this correct? I can recognize the adverbs, but I'm having difficulty figuring out which ones are adjectives.

I do not need all of the answers. Just which sentences have adverbs that modify adjectives.

You identify the verb....the action word....then the word that modifies it is the adverb.....a glow appears...appears is the verb....barely is the adverb....

Lights move....unexpectedly and fast are both adverbs.
A curtain of light forms...more clearly are the adverbs.
It swirls and dances ....somewhat closer are the adverbs.

I watch.....very quietly are the adverbs

I have comprehended....only just are the adverbs

The light starts to move....more quickly are the adverbs

The glow is gone...almost completely are the adverbs

The norther light will disappear....mever completely are the adverbs

Adverbs describe the verb...adjective describe the noun or direct object.....like night sky ...night is the adjective....describing the sky....glowing curtain...glowing is the adjective describing the curtain....northern horizon...northern is the adjective describing the horizon.....

Not sure I got these all...but you get the picture, I think. The verb is always the word or words that do the action for the noun which is the subject of the sentence. The words that further describe the action words are the adverbs..

I'll analyze the first sentence for you. That should give you enough of a clue to figure out the rest yourself.

"glow" is a noun (a thing) and "appears" is a verb (appears is what the glow does). "barely" is an adverb that modifies the verb "appears" (how does it appear? it barely appears). "just" is an adverb that modifies an adverb. (how barely does it appear? just barely). The rest of the sentence is a prepositional phrase. The phrase modifies the appearance of the glow (where it appears). Hence it is an adverbial phrase that modifies the verb.

None of the sentences contains an adverb that modifies an adjective.

somewhat closer
completely gone
Adverb Adjective

The rest of them are either modifiying verbs or other adverbs.

Fast is not an adjective here. It is used for the adverb "quickly." It is not supposed to be an adverb, but we do use fast as an adverb sometimes.

Just, unexpectedly, further and quickly are the only adverbs which I can spot as modifying adverbs in these questions. It's a really horrible exercise!
