I had braces fitted only 2 weeks ago! Last Tuesday one of my brackets came unstuck and so I went to the ortodontist on Friday to have him stick it back on. I have now just noticed that another bracket has come unstuck meaning I am going to have to go back again! Can someone tell me if this is common for brackets to routinely come loose. Also will the orthodontist end up charging me for re-sticking brackets back on if they continuously come loose? I know that they charge you if you continuously break the brace.

I am taking good care of my braces and I don't understand why in the space of two weeks I have had two brackets come loose: I am only eating soft foods, and am breaking the food up into little pieces and eating with my back teeth.

P.S. Because I am an adult I am paying the full cost for my treatment. Also I would prefer answers from people in th UK since it may be different in US.

Thank you

I have just had my braces removed (hurray!) but in the first week one of mine came loose. It was reattached at no extra cost. Another one came loose halfway through my treatment, again for no obvious reason.

I think it's to do with the pressure on the teeth - until you have worn the wires for a while it is hard for the orthodontist to predict exactly which pressures will be too great for the brackets to take. My orthodontist changed something when the brackets came off. For the first one, he reattached the bracket (which was on a particularly out of line tooth) and then used wire rather than elastic to attach it to the wire. The second time, when the bracket came off a back tooth, he put a metal ring around the tooth instead. It might be worth asking your orthodontist whether you need another solution for these teeth?

Good luck with the treatment - it is worth it in the end!

I had a problem with brackets on crowns. Read your contract; emergency repairs should be in the contract agreement. Good luck with the braces. I'm an adult (51) and my braces have been off for almost 5 months.

It's not uncommon to have brackets come loose, but it's a bit crap that you've had two come off in two weeks' time when you're following the standards of care (soft foods, eating with back teeth,etc.). I'd call the office and just voice your concern for the fact that you've already had to pay for this once, and you don't understand why the brackets are coming off since you're not doing anything to cause it to happen. Brackets shouldn't come loose unless you're eating hard, sticky foods (caramels, for instance). Sometimes they come loose from normal wear and tear, but not after just two weeks' time...

I too paid for my full cost of treatment and it was steep. They were rather good about it in the office though, and if something popped off, they fixed it for me at the rate of an office visit. Like I said, just call the office and explain you're concerned about having to keep paying for this. If they think you may take your business elsewhere, they'll be quick to help you. They might even let you come back in since you've already had to pay once.

I've had my braces on for 2 years and never yet had a bracket come loose or fall off. If your ortho charges you for re-applying them then i would complain, it is obviously shoddy workmanship. Possibly consider trying to see another ortho who does the job right the first time?

I've had braces twice and they've never once come off, especially not that quickly! The glue they normally use is incredibly strong, so it sounds like the stuff they're using is pretty weak. Since you're paying, make sure they don't keep charging you for a crappy job!

if problems occur so early on, shoddy work really, I would seek a second opinion and change orthodontist all together.
have you checked that he or she is a fully qualified orthodontist and not just a specialist [ a self given name ] that in the UK most use within the so-called NHS specialist.
Orthodontic has only been recognised as a speciality by the GDC in 1999. contact the General Dental Council for advise on what you can do.

i had braces and that happened constantly. i would take care of them as well.

and they shouldn't charge you if all they're doing is re-sticking them. if you lost them, i would see the problem... but sticking them back on isn't really doing anything.

you cant fix it like it needs to be fixed. sry...go to ur doc.
Stop eating hard stuff...the things are expensive...in other words you have to be breaking them somehow.
