An occasional theft of cat food is ok, but a diet of cat food produces too much uric acid, which will cause kidney and other problems.
I use small amounts of *quality* kitten food kibble as training treats..

No, a dog should not eat catfood. A dog's system is different than a cat. The ingredients along with the processing in the catfood differ from the ones made in the dogfood, and the two should not be mixed, says the pet food manufacturers that sell it.

I guess it really depends on the cat food. If it is the dried type, I would not see a problem. The stuff in a can might have fish bones in it, >and that is not good for dog<.
Besides a cat's diet is more fatty than a dog's, so it would not be in the animals best interest to do that.

As long as the dog is also eating dogfood---I used to have a dog that ate most of his food and then finish off what catfood the cat hadn't. Meanwhile the cat decided she wanted to finish off the dogfood the dog hadn't finished. The cat lived to be about 15 and the dog 14.

NO... There is WAY to much protein in Catfood... feeding a dog a lot of cat food could result in kidney failure!!!!

Cats require more protine in their diets so the foods are different formulas. You should be feeding your dog... dog food. However, you cant blaim your dog for snarfing up the cat food if he/she can get to it. Eating a little here or there wont hurt him, however you want to make sure that his main diet is geared towards dogs so that he is getting all of the neutriants that he/she needs. With the recent scare in pet foods lately you can make your own wet dog food as well. Many web sites have recepies that are safe for your dog, easy and firly inexpensive to make. Good luck.

No they shouldn't. Occasionally if a dog gets into the cat food, it shouldn't hurt but not as a regular diet. The only time my dog ate it (and it was very little) at someone elses house, she got diarrhea. I have a friend whose Yorkie had diabetes for which she gave him shots daily. He ate some cat food and got very ill from it.

Absolutely don't let your dog eat cat food: it's so much higher in protein and fat that in the long run it will cause kidney damage to your dog. If the dog accidentally grabs some kitty kibble, though, it's alright as long as it isn't the normal food it eats.

If that dog was raised on cat food, and at times eats it, there is no harm done. In dog food, theres, all that crude fat, and left overs from what ever the companies could not use for US to eat such as,
animal tails,
groins
( though some people like eating that stuff)
eyes
feet
noses
hooves
certain inners
the list goes on, I'm making myself sick thinking about it.

Dog food and Cat food(dry) is essentially the same thing just in different sized pieces. The only thing you might want to be careful of feeding your dog is the weird furball control kind, because it is treated with a chemical to reduce cats ingestment of hair. Other then that they are extremely similiar and I have fed my dog leftover cat food that was just a run of the mill cat food for several days after running out of dog food or having a mouser die and not wanting to waste the leftovers.
