x_ill,

thanks for the feedback but, i tried adding a sub and amp and the head units ambient noise sensor picks it up as outside nois and jacks the volume up to compensate, so i need to disable this function or get another Head unit. if you know how to disable this function or cut the sensor this would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I have an AVIC-D3 in my STi and it is pretty decent. The quality is pretty good, and there are more bells and whistles than you can shake a stick at. It's no denon Z1 in terms of sound quality, but the price is perfect.

There aren't many options for double din and some of them look pretty ugly, like the kenwood dpx series. Clarion has a double din touch screen deck that sounds pretty good, but to me the screen isn't as good as pioneer or alpine. The Alpine IVA-W200 is a great deck and you should be able to find it for $800ish.

The stock deck in the ML isn't that bad, have you thought of adding a line out converter and some decent amps and drivers? you'd be amazed at what the stock deck is capable of with some power and good quality drivers behind it.
