My doctor told me not to double up on zyrtec or claritin, but that it's okay to take zyrtec in the morning and claritin in the evening (or vice versa). Or you could add benadryl. but don't excede the recommended dose of any one of these.

DO NOT take more than 1 zyrtec tablet at a time. it's made to stay in your system for 24 hrs. if you take more than prescribed, you will overdose.
I'm surprised that your doctor didn't give you a prednisone or cortisone shot to help with the reaction. or at least a prescription for prednisone tablets.
if you're really miserable, call your doctor back and tell them that you need a shot or some prednisone tablets. and also ask if you can use something topical to help with the itching.
Best Wishes

You do not need to use more tablets or something with it. If the Zyrtec is not working call your doc and let him know. The doc has no clue that it isn't working if you don't tell him. You can use hyrdocortisone cream or calamine lotion on the skin if it itches.

it is never good to take more medicine than what your doctor precribes, for the itch try so colomine lotion its pink, and put some oatmeal in a sock and take a nice bath with nothing but the sock the oatmeal is subpose to help get rid of it. I know it works on sunburns.
