Create a 360 account. http://360.yahoo.com
Upload the picture and mark as primary.
Go to "My Profile" and "Edit My Info" and select the picture.

You have to create a Yahoo 360 ID. It's easy and takes about 15 seconds. You can skip all the stupid stuff, like customizing it and so on to make it go quicker. But, you'll be able to use a real picture from your comp as your avatar display pic.

I've been wondering that myself. I'm really good with computer and this kind of thing is normally very easy for me,
After reading the good answers you got, my husband and I scoured my profile and finally found the little link I'd been missing.
So just in case you're having that issue too, when you open your profile look in the same green field where you pic should be and in the column on the right side the very last thing in that column is a white with two links, Edit My Info is the one you want.

i don't think u need a 360 account but try going to your profile and click edit info and you should be able to add pictures
