Alot of people believe that it is very bad luck/bad oman. Some artists won't close it because they believe in the bad luck it can bring. It all depends on your beliefs really. But to be on the safe side I wouldn't get it closed. (Just in case)
Hope this helps and happy tattooing!

Some tattoo artists believe closing a band around an arm or leg could seal or trap in a demon. I have a band on one of my arms and that is what the artist told me. I am not really superstitious, but my band is not closed as the artist didn't really want to close it.

I don't know exactly how that myth started, but I have yet to see solid proof that anything in life is always lucky or unlucky [though people can believe what they want; I have my own compulsions too]. I do know that it's much harder for an artist to close a band because it would have to be proportioned perfectly to match up; it's kind of like how there's always one aunt in everyone's family who can make the giftwrap paper pattern match up at the overlap no matter the size of the package and no one else can figure out how [or at least I never could]. A couple times I've heard artists joke about the superstition, claiming it was invented by other tattoo artists who couldn't size bands properly in order to make them link up into one consistent piece and wanted to scare their clients out of asking for that.

This is an actual Native American belief. The theory is that a closed tattoo traps the persons soul in! It's crazy that you asked this because my friend (a tattoo artist) told me this just last week!

i have never heard that. some styles of japanese tattoos don't completely close all the way around but many sleeves do. it's your friend's body and he can get whatever he wants to get, as long as he is comfortable with getting it.

luck is what you make of it. if you believe that something horrendous is going to happen if your tattoos close, then chances are, you will make that happen yourself.
