Are you talking about authoritarian, permissive and democratic parenting styles? If so, they would handle this situation in very different ways. Authoritarian parents exert control- what they say goes. If the child disobeys, these are often the parents who punish harshly. The child would be instructed to complete the task, or suffer the consequences (which usually are harsher than the "crime"). The permissive parent gives up control to the child. The child runs the house, and the parent is just the pawn. In this house, the child would do whatever they pleased- while the parent either gave up on discipline (because it takes effort) or just didn't bother to set any limits at all. In this case, the parent may ask three or ten times more for the child to pick up the toys, but will never enforce it. They will end up picking up the toys when the day is over. The final parent- democratic- is in the middle. They generally know how to balance when it is time to "pick their battles" and see how being too much of one way or another is harmful. They see the benefit in discipline as a form of teaching, not punishment- and they know that being walked on by their child will not do either of them any good. Children need boundaries and limits and these parents are good at setting, enforcing, and following through. In this case, the child may be asked one more time to pick up, the TV would have been turned off, and a consequence given. If the child does not comply, the consequence would be followed through, and it would be fair (such as all the toys left out would be put away for a week). Hope this helps!

Authoritarian:

Spank the child and shout at her that unless she picks them up right now she will not be getting any dinner.

Permissive:

Say oh well never mind, you just carry on watching TV I'll pick it up

Authoritative:

Explain that you would like the toys to be picked up and that you should do what is asked. Give a choice of picking the toys up or not watching TV or playing out for the rest of the day or some other appropriate punishment that you know they will not like and stick with it if they still refuse to pick up the toys

I don't know what you mean by the three basic patterns but I would turn the TV off and ask her to tidy up (loudly).

shut the TV off, and ask her to pick up, the TV can go back on after it is done, not really what you asked but that is what i would do
