I want to make a line graph with the numbers 40, 80, 120 and 160 (mass of salt in grams) as my measurements on the y- axis, and 26.1, 48.1, 65, and 80.5 (temperature in degrees Celsius) as my meaurements on the x-axis.
I tried inputing the numbers in two separate columns next to each other on a spread sheet, highlighting them and using chart wizard, but i keep getting two lines (Series one and series two). I don't want two lines, i want one line, how do i set the numbers for the x-axis to fit my data. please help.
tell me if i need to clarify.

If you have your 2 columns with your values, click on the Chart Wizard. I'm assuming you want to use a line graph for this, so choose a line graph then click next. Click the series tab and then click "add". click the arrow on the right side of the Values field. Highlight your "y-axis values" and press enter. Below that click on the arrow on the right side of the Category (X) axis box. Highlight the x-axis values and press enter. click next. On the next tabs you can name the chart and lable the x & y axis. You can also remove the legend (which will take the"series" box off your chart. Click Finish and you're all set!!!

I don't know how much practical computer experience you have, so if I'm talking a little simple please forgive me!

Put the two groups in columns, the salt grams first (this will be your x-axis).

After you select the Line Graph option and hit 'Next', it should go to an screen labeled Data Range (and show you a basic rendition of your graph). Look to the top of that window, and you should see a second tab called 'Series' select it.

The only part of this screen you want is the bottom: it allows you to designate the x-axis labels. If you click the funky little [<-] button (to cheat, it's the third one down), then highlight all the temperature numbers (in the order you want them to appear left to right on the graph) and click the little [[ ]] button to go back, it should show something like this: =Sheet1!$B$1:$B$4. That's excell-speak for your choice.

Now you can click 'Next' and add some details, or 'Finish' if you're happy with the default labels. That should take care of you!
