I will tell you that I have one on my arm (couldn't really feel it that much) pretty big ones on each shoulder blade (ouch, but bearable) and one on my right butt cheek of water lilies that is pretty darn big (big butt??!! lol) and dragon flies flying above it that run onto my lower back/butt area. The pain is excruciating! I have had all those tattoos, tongue piercing, labret piercing, childbirth without drugs and they are nothing compared to that pain! I actually think I may have gone into shock a little because I couldn't stop shaking and felt weak.
I think because it is such a fleshy area with so many nerves, it is more sensitive.
But honestly, I WOULD do it again. It's pain with a purpose, and it is by far my fave tattoo!!
Good luck (take some leather to bite on!!)

They do hurt on the lower back especially if you get a lot colouring done. I have 25 hours ink done to my torso so far and the colouring the worst. But its worth the pain when you see the result

I have my lower legs tattoed and my lower back was atleast 3 times worse. You can definitely feel it alot more and the needle feels like it has to drag through more bone than it did anywhere else on my body. Just be prepared for it but don't psyche yourself out. Take deep breaths and try to relax as much as possible.

It won't hurt anymore than the one on your leg, but the closer to the spine, the more it hurts, just because there isn't as much flesh there, it's more bony on the spine. Lizard on your lower back? Cool!! =]

It's bearable, some peoples pain is different, I am covered in tattoos and some girl on here said the top of the foot didn't hurt her at all and it was the most painful out of all of mine, everyone is different, you will be fine, tell the tattooer to stop and take breaks if need be.

Well everyone is different, and I have a feeling if you've gotten a tattoo before that the feeling you should expect will be close to the others. Plus, going by your user name, if you've had 3 kids, this won't be bad at all.

Hurts like a B*T*H!!! I have 2 tatoos, one on the top of my foot which didn't hurt at all, and one on my lower back that was extremely painful. It was worth it for me because of the reason behind it, but unless you're getting a tatoo there for sentimental reasons, I wouldn't recommend having it done.

My daughter had a tattoo done across her lower back. She said the bit over her spine was very painful because it goes over a bony bit. It does look nice in that position though.

Good luck....grit your teeth!

the lower back wasnt that bad for me. granted it hurt but nearly as bad as i was expecting. not only did i do it once, i did it twice as a cover-up. the 2nd one hurt even more b/c he had to take the color deeper to cover the first tattoo.

Smack in the middle of your lower back may be slightly more painful than on your leg (since it's closer to the bone). However, it won't be much worse.
