Shouldn't all things be subject to the punchline of the comedian?

Why does God get mockery-exempt status?

Clever question! You're obviously an intelligent guy. As a well-schooled comedian, you know that any phrase employed outside the context is hardly going to elicit the intended response. Context is king.

Context rules here too. The entire phrase in the Bible says, "Don't be deceived, God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows, that will he also reap." The word "mocked" as used by St. Paul is not intended to be the equivalent to comedic ridicule, mimicry, or some form of derision. None of us are exempt from that and we all could stand to lighten up a little and laugh at ourselves (especially Christians). The Greek word translated "mocked" literally means "to turn your nose up at" something or someone; to act as though you can outwit or outplay the system (in this case, God's system: natural law).

In this context (read Galatians 6:7-8) the idea is axiomatic: Just as there are physical consequences for violating natural laws, there are spiritual consequences for violating moral laws. Although (like smoking) the consequences may not reveal themselves immediately, "whatever a man sows, he WILL (almost invariably) reap" - whether physically or spiritually. It's an unalterable law of the universe. You can think the laws of nature don't apply to you, but if you jump off a building don't be surprised if even Superman's cape doesn't keep you from messing up the pavement.

Why is God exempt in this case? Break it down...
--"Don't be deceived..." (Don't try to outsmart yourself)
--"God is not mocked..." (It's His game and He can't be outwitted, outplayed, or outlasted)
--"Whatever you sow, you will also reap." (No explanation needed; the law of sowing and reaping is as old as the first farmer.)

In this case, He will get the last laugh.

Because mockery is a frequent and neccessary part of discussion. If you don't allow mockery, you limit discussion. The writers of the 'holy books' understand that it is in their best interests not to have people discuss the book.

If a person is subjected to mockery, the person will be able to withstand the mockery only if he is certain that his viewpoint is right. If the person is unsure, that person will get figuratively buried. Mockery is one very good way to help determine the strength of a person. The no mockery rule shows a position of weakness.

The 'no mockery' rule also reinforces the view of god being a tyrannical dictator.

It never made ANY sense to me... if such a being were truly omnipotent and omniscient, then he/she wouldn't care because he/she would understand the causes and conditions from whence the alleged mockery came and simply not worry about it. While I refrain from such activity out of simple respect because I have no desire to cause harm to the egos and happiness of others who don't understand this concept, you could mock the Buddha and me all day and I don't really care, and I'm sure the Buddha doesn't either... all the Buddhas understand where the behavior is coming from and has compassion for the sentient being with the incorrect view. I don't care because you can't mentally hurt me anymore... the Buddha's teachings cleared up all that noise for me.

i'm no longer a fool, so i will by no ability MOCK God.... i will depart that as much as ignorant risk takers who're prepared to play Russian roulette with their eternity. You lack non secular discernment. lots of the bible is figurative... descriptions have been made based on the superb assessment the writers ought to apply from what that they have been uncovered to in that era. that by utilising no ability takes faraway from it being the inspired notice of God, although. Have an enlightening day, and destiny.

Religious idea-complexes defend the mental territory that they have colonized extremely strictly. Nothing that makes light of their Thing can be tolerated, out of fear that a human will stop feeding it.

Of course no real god would mind being made fun of. If there is a creator being, and it is the source of laughter, we have to assume it has a sense of humor.

The toxic memetics that masquerade currently as 'paths to knowledge of god' pretty much prove their own worthlessness with their lack of humor.

Well....you're the King of Sparta here, Sean. God has been the subject of more punchlines than we could probably all count together. As far as comedians go, anything goes. They are doing their job.

If the Bible teaches us anything at all, it's that God is a hyper-sensitive, insecure dork that is so desperate for our love that he will damn us for eternity if we don't give it, and cannot take a bit of criticism, second-guessing or mockery.
