Bigger forebrain, with a capacity for abstract thought, long-term planning, and hence civilization as we know it (with all its advantages and disadvantages, including our impact on the planet).

Other than that... *checks body*. Limbs, lungs, stomach, genitals, skin, eyes, and so forth...

Yep. Definitely an animal. That opposable thumb does come in handy, though.

Animals are loving and happy and sad and all the things humans should be.
But animals have no concept of a future date. Like they don't say: "I am going to grow up and get married and have two children and raise them to be kind and loving."
It just happens and they do things by instinct.
Kind of like they are programed to do.
Animals cannot love a God they cannot see.
Animals cannot understand the concept of free will and love by choice.
They love those who take care of them. Which is a good trait for humans. But it is different than love by free choice.
That is why when a women is forced to marry someone because her parents thinks it is a good idea.
She has the choice given an animal. She nor her husband ever knows the beauty of someone finding that person special out of all the people in the world and freely loving that person. Not because if she leaves she will be beaten or killed, but because she wants to stay and be with that person forever. That is what makes us different.
We are suposed to be the thinking ones who reason things out and come up with a good idea.
That is a gift from God and he wants us to love him to.
But he doesn't force us to do that. Because love by force is that really love from the heart?

I have looked at this question for many years. I have come to the conclusion that the only difference between humans and the "lower" life forms is the fact that ignoring disease humans are the only animal on the face of the earth that have butt cheeks all of their life. Some other primates do develop butt cheeks when they come into season but after that the butt cheeks shrink away to nothing, not humans. We keep ours from the day we are born until the day we die.

I can control fire.

I can ponder my own death and meaning of life.

Anyone that says animals aren't self aware, or don't have emotions has either never had a pet, or is full of crap.

Say what? We *are* animals! We can't tell whether whales, for instance, are self-aware or not (to respond to your bullet).

But we do destroy other species and destroy and alter the environment more that any other animal ever has done.

The biggest difference is that humans were given a spiritual need (a need to connect with God and to understand). Animals have no such need. Also, we were made in God's image with the attributes that he has especially those of love, wisdom, power, justice.

Well, first that's like asking how an orange is different from a fruit. But anyway since I know what you mean I'll answer:

I think, an animal thinks, but I don't think that an animal thinks it thinks.
