I'm thinking about buying that Sony Xplod 1000Watt 2-channel amp from Walmart. Is that a bad buy? I want only 1 sub hooked to it. Is a 2 channel what I want, or do I need a "mono" amp to get the most out of the amp. thanks in advance..

Since Sony is CEA-2006 compliant, their ratings are NOT overrated.

To qualify for this rating, a manufacturer voluntarily submits their product to be tested, if passed then the manufacturer gets to have this compliancy added to their specifications.

What it all means? It means the amplifier in question pushes the watts stated in the specifications. This basically levels the playing field for consumers.

I'm not sure what the whole thing against Sony amps is, but I have the 1200 watt (200 watt RMS X 2 @ 4 ohm) amp and I am quite pleased with it's performance.

The other important thing is to have your subs in the right enclosure.

This Sony amp is 2006 CEA compliant, but only the RMS power rating, peak watts mean nothing. One sub that is an 8 ohm or 4ohm DVC sub would make this amp work at 4 ohms. I wouldn't push this amp below 4 ohms.

Nothing against sony, I used mine on a pair of subs and it sounded as good as my current rockford, just not as loud. For 1 sub that would be a good amp. This guy doesn't need any really high quality stuff so let him find out for himself what he likes. All he has to lose is money, so what if he gets a bad amp, it's just money.

This really depends on what you would be paying for it. If your paying under $150, maybe. Over $150, we could recommend something MUCH better.
Yes, this amp would push one 4Ohm sub (with a power rating of about 500 watts rms) perfectly. Or, 2 2Ohm subs connected stereo.

Good Luck!

i would go against sony amps. they tend to overheat. go to onlinecarstereo and check out mono amps if its only 1 sub. anything over 100 is free shipping and u can get a 3 or 5 year ext warranty

Sony Xplod is entry-level quality and highly overrated in their specs.

What type of subwoofer do you have and how much do you want to spend?
