Several conservative avatars here on YA keep referring to liberals who spit on the returning soldiers from Iraq. I know this happened 35 years ago with the Vietnam War, but I have not see/heard/read anything of this sort happening currently. Is this happening and can you provide a source to substantiate those claims? Or are these accusers simply reverting to hyperbole in an attempt to bolster an empty argument?

I think that would be a horrible thing to do to a soldier; I want to know if it really is happening.

In the janurary 28th issue of the New York Times, Times reporter IAN URBINA wrote an article mentioning a anti war protester spitting on a wounded iraq War veteran at the DC protest march.

The link to that story is posted below, but the NY Times requires you to subscribe to view it.

I have not heard of that happening with this war. You are correct they did do that with VietNam. My husband is military and there has been no spitting that I know of. At least none of his friends have said anything and I think that he would have heard about it if they knew of it happening. I think what they maybe be meaning is not a literal spitting but they are trying to use something to make the others looks bad. WHich is pathetic to say the least. If people put half of the energy they put into attacking one another for their beliefs into something more constructive then we may see a big change in this country.

In Portland Oregon, on March 18'th leftists burned a flag and a US soldier in effigy. Sorry that I can't give you any links, someone tld me they saw it on You Tube. The spitting incident happened at the protest in Washington DC when a returning vet, who had lost his right leg in Iraq, was supposedly spit at by one of the anti war protestors. I never heard anything more on this. No matter what anybody feels about the war or Bush, this sort of thing is wrong. This is how it started with the returning Vietnam vets. I really don't think any of us will just sit by and let this happen again.

The government has spit on the returning veterans and those who have lost their lives. I work in health care and have actually been left in tears at the end of the day when I have seen the utter abandonment that a dying veteran was left with.

I forced the issue with some other resources and his care was finally covered. His family is left with bitterness and his children without a father.

I was treated like I had no business advocating for him and that they would "take care of their own". I am honored when I can do anything for a veteran. No one understands what they have gone through. I just hope that the government can wrap their head around their responsibility to those have sacrificed so much.

More demonization.

I hate to break everyone's bubble but I wasn't spit on when I got back from Vietnam. In fact I got hired on a preference.
Everyone in my Police Academy Class was a Vietnam Vet.

I dont believe that has happened in the Iraqi war. The accusations being made are in reference to when the troops came back from vietnam and the anti-war left spit on them and called them babykillers, some people wouldnt even hire vets. Seeing the similarities with opposition to vietnam from the left and the same opposition from the same group today, we are assuming the outcome will be the same.

Nobody ever spit on me. but I've definitely gotten some ugly treatment from people. I've been called names, given dirty looks, been refused service, etc. As a soldier we're told to avoid so-called peace marches in uniform. I guess that's why I'm naked.
