Well, Joseph above is correct, except the Mark III version has been announced now.
But, it all depends what you're looking for.
Most people are looking for a simple, point and shoot compact camera. For that- I like the Canon SD series. Perhaps an SD700IS as it has excellent image quality and built in image stabilization. Or, you could go a step up to the G7. Granted, a little pricey for a mid-sized digicam, but once again, excellent image quality, a great lens 35-210mm zoom, and lotsa' features
As Vintage points out below, Jordon (above) was incorrect. You can buy AA sized rechargable NMHi batteries for the Canon A-series.

It depends on what you're going to use it for. All canons are good. If you're just using it casually, just make sure to get one 4 or more megapixels, with 4 or more optical zoom.
I have an S3-IS and use it a bit more than casually- I'm on my school's yearbook staff and use it for a bit of personal art. I love it, but if you're just looking for a camera for family events and vacations and stuff, use a cheaper one.
Also- don't get any of the powershot "A" series. As in canon poweshot A(insert model number here) they can only use regular AA bateries, not rechargeable and they use them up so fast.

Canon has a new 'BEST' pocket format called the SD1000. It is the latest in a long series of Powershot compact Digital, starting with the 200's a few years ago.

My experiences were good with Canon. My favoutite camera for photos is the Canon SD500. Its sleek, lightweight, and takes 7 megapixel shots. There are numerous modes that make it easy to take just the right shot.
Hope this helped.

One ans you got from Jordan D is that Canon A series will not take re-charables only regular batteries. That's hard for me to believe.

They all are the good.
It really depends on your price range.
If you want to spend less than $200 go for the Canon A550
