You can trick it into counting sentences though. Replace every period with *** or something like that (CTRL + H). You will get a message that word has made x number of replacements. That would be your approximate sentence count. CTRL + Z to undo those changes!

Go to Tools | Word count ...

As far as sentences go, it does not count sentences. But if, at the end of every sentence, you use a period followed by two spaces, use search and replace of ". " and it will count them. It will be pretty close. Just do not save it after you do the search and replace. From my days of yesteryear in school, though, they usually wanted to know the number of words.

And no i dont believe it counts sentences, but it does count lines.
