I like to work with children as well. Through my volunteer center, I lead a service project at my local children's shelter. I would recommend that you contact your local volunteer center. They can provide all sorts of one-time or short-term volunteer activities that match your interest and meet real community needs as well. In addition, they can connect you directly with a specific agency based upon what you want to do.
Through my volunteer center, I also tutor children at the local library, enhance visitor experience at the local museum, package food at the local food bank, and a lot of other diverse projects.
Check out your local volunteer center through the following link:
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/centerlist.cfm?State=OH
They can help you find a project that meets community needs, and works well for you as well.
Good luck!

Contact the Homeless Student's Liaison at your nearest school and fiond out where the nearest shelters are including transitional shelters and transitional housing. Call the shelters and ask what they need done. If there is a long term shelter offer to start a dance group or give dance lessons to help build self confidence as well as entertain the children and / or teens. Other possibbilities range from starting aq food drive to doing a home shower for families leaving the shelter to reestablish a home, to tutoring, to planting a garden with the kids, to offering to clean the kitchens or shower rooms, to helping create a PR site or press release to staging a dance contest to raise $. Your nearest shelters will have a wish list of things they would so much like to see happen and can't afford but some of these ideas may jog your imagination and theirs.
The homeless ed liaison can also tell you about any programs in the community for homeless kids who are not in shelters and in all honesty they may have the greater need. Sheltered kids at least have the shelter. http://lampga.tripod.com may give you some ideas on this. L.A.M.P. helps homeless and high risk preteens and teens in the Gainesville GA area but a lot of what they do could be done somewhere else if someone had the dedication to help do it.
Thank you very much for caring and wanting to help.

A really good charity for kids is Child Help USA. This is a non
-profit organization that deals with children who have been battered and abused. This is a national Org. so you may try and call your telephone directory and see if there is one in your area. I have created my own projects that have helped donate money but personally there isnt one in my area that I have been able to do hands on work. They are a great org. though and the cause is absolutely worth it.

Habitat for Humanity is a good cause.
Talk to some local churches about being a mentor for their youth groups.
Also, contact the big brothers/big sisters, you will have hands on with the kids.
Call your local police station or welfare office and ask them about programs they may have to help kids.
I am in touch with the Salvation Army in my town and they give me names of people in the community who are destitute and the families need clothing, etc..
I also have my 'Plant a Row' ministry where I ask gardeners/farmers to plant an extra row of veggies and through a community program, I receive names of families with kids who need fresh veggies and fruits.. I have my ministry advertised in the local paper ahead of time so the gardeners have enough time to do this...
God Bless you for your kind heart and wanting to help others.

I dunno about Ohio much, but I actually started up a girl scout troop at a local elementary school and I have the girls help me out in homeless shelters and stuff for badges. They love it, their parents think its awesome, and I have 8 little helping hands who are also helping out the kids without homes in the homeless shelters. One girl has become close friends with another girl there and her mom (who does foster care) is actually looking into getting the girl into her foster home. Its really touching - and fun!

Try checking if there is a Boys & Girls club in your area. Or ask hospitals if you can volunteer such as reading books or playing board games with children.

Look up the name of a specific charity and then go and volunteer at their activities. They may not be what you first expect...but be willing.
