Members of 1 branch love to give hell to members of all the other branches. It's unwritten law when you've served or are serving.
For instance, a guy in the Navy has no room to talk if he's calling the Coast Guard gay. Join the Navy, it's not just an adventure, it's a relationship.

Well, a lot of people above are wrong. The Coast Guard has been deployed over seas to help out the Navy.
The Coast Guard isn't recognized as much for a few reasons:
1. They are the smallest branch, only about 39,000 people on active duty. The next smallest is the Marine Corps at about 177,000.
2. The Coast Guard isn't really involved in combat like the other branches, which makes them seem "less military"
3. Most people don't even know it is a military branch. I think most people think of it kind of like law enforcement.

The Coast Guard falls under the Department of Transportaion, not the Department of Defense, so in fact they are not part of the Military, they do hold simular ranking structure to the Navy, and can be called up at times of war, )9/11)but they patrol OUR waters, not sent out like the Navy. They have respected jobs and missions, but not considered Military.

The truth is that the USCG is part of the civilian structure of the government. However when there is a time of war the CG can be called into action. To counter the assumption that Coasties do not engage the enemy, what about the medal of honor that one Coastie earned? Or are drug smugglers and Human smugglers not armed? I am sure that they engage those riff-raff on a constant basis. My two Cents.

The US Coast Guard is a branch of Homeland Security and as a result does not get the fanfare it rightly deserves.
The Coast Guard mission is to guard our Ports and waterways, and to interdict smugglers of contraband and drugs. Their mission is critical to the security of this country, but they often fall out of the national press limelight because they are not part of the Department of Defense. Coast Guard members are serving in Iraq performing missions in inland waterways. They are America's unsung heroes.

the Coast take care of does fall below the dept of Transportation previously it got here below native land protection. the objective of arming the Coast take care of had by and massive been for regulation enforcement. The Coast take care of people i know, inspite of the undeniable fact that, choose to think of of themselves by and massive as a Humanitarian - seek and Rescue rigidity. for the time of the Spanish American conflict on the seige of Havana harbor, the army commander cautioned a Coast take care of officer for the Medal of Honor, yet Congress had to layout a particular medal for him because of the fact the CMH replaced into in basic terms for military workers. like the Marines, the Coast take care of gets an excellent variety of its help from the army, including their chaplains.

The coast gaurd is always made fun of by the navy. why because they use smaller ships and the stories that they never go to war is crap. They where in Vietnam, and in Iraq. they are more of a home land security then a fighting in other nations waters force.

for decades the Coast Guard has fallen under the Department of Transportation, not the Department of Defense. They were not considered true military by other services because of this. In fact I do believe they are now under the Department of Homeland Security now, so technically they are still not a Defense Department organization.

The Coast Guard only becomes part of the Military when the country is at war, aligned to the USN.
As a rule they protect coastal waters and perhaps release a Destroyer/Frigate or two to be assigned else where
As for the men and women what right do you have to cast aspersions on their performance of duty

From what I gather, it's because they're not combat-oriented. Sure they might have a few crew-served weapons on board, but it's not really like they're using them. Then again, there's not much fighting at all out in the ocean right now.
