Not very. 30 minutes brisk walking 3 to 5 times a week is the recommendation for cardiovascular health, but would not be intense enough to lose a lot of weight. You should aim for about an hour of moderate to high intensity exercise three times a week to start seeing results.
If you're not used to exercise, then a brisk walk for half an hour or 40 minutes 3 to 5 times a week is a good start.
Good luck.

Walking burns about 100 calories per mile for a 150 pound person. Heavier individuals burn more calories proportional to their weight. A pound of fat is about 3500 calories. So to lose a pound, you need to walk about 30 miles. The arithmetic isn't exact since the effort increases your metabolism for sometime after the workout.
I lost 40 pounds in 16 weeks walking five days a week. I generally did 30 minutes at lunch and sometimes did another 30 minutes or so in the evening. On weekends I did one really long walk that lasted up to 2 - 3 hours.
As you might guess, I think walking can be a very effective way to lose weight.

Walking is great for maintaining your weight. Walk 40 minutes a day. That extra 10 minutes is a lot. It doesn't even have to be a brisk walk. I go for a 40 minute walk everyday. It keeps me from getting depressed.

I heard it was after 45min that the body starts burning fat calories. Your heart rate has to be up for you to be doing any slimming. I lost 50 pounds by walking briskly UPHILL every day. Your heartrate goes up almost immediatly and gets you 'in the zone' to start losing weight. It is absolutely the best excersize that I have found. It is easy to stick with, you don't have to do it as long as walking, it makes your heart beat as fast as running without having to actually run (i hate running), it feels good to work your leg muscles, it's easier on your body and joints etc. Any increase in the excersize you are doing now will be effecive for getting slim! Just keep up on it and you will continue to lose weight. It really is easy just don't let yourself make excuses or talk yourself out of it. I would do it rain or shine (winter is a different subject). While we're on the subject now, it's not winter anymore and i've gained about 15lbs (during the winter) and could lose a few pounds myself, I am going to get off the computer right now and go walking with my dog Foxi. Bye.

5 days a week it is a good start. However the old myth that walking a mile is as good for you as running is not true. Regularly pushing your heart to 85% of its maximum rate is good for it. This means puffing and sweating!
