I am a Muslim woman who wears the veil. Many non-muslims looked at me like I am scum. Why is it that The Virgin Mary was able to cover herself (who by the way dresses very similar to Muslim women) and she was praised. Nuns cover themselves and no one says a word. Is being decent really such a bad thing?

I agree.....I dont feel oppressed by hijab; I wear it entirely by choice. If I do feel oppressed it is only by the judgements of nonmuslims. Isn't it my right to cover myself if I want to?

For anyone reading these who doesn't know. Women who are Muslim wear their hijab (head scarf) traditionally because they believe that they are sacred and they want to selectively choose who gets to see them.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all.

It is the distortion of the religion that has made it mean that women are dirty or sexually immoral and need to cover themselves etc.

This was not the true intent.

I don't think it has to do with decency though. There is nothing indecent about the human body. The human body is sacred and beautiful.

It is because there ARE a lot of women who are FORCED to cover based upon the distortions of the religion. Because for them it is a lack of freedom instead of something that frees them. That is probably why people may look sideways at a woman wearing a hijab.

They may just be wondering if it is by your own choice or not.

Explain to them. Let them know. If you allow yourself to feel outcast by these things, the opportunity to educate people about something I assume is very important to you is missed.

You are absolutely right. Muslim women in general are not being respected as they should be wearing the veil. Sadly, the first thoughts that come to mind when people hear the word "Muslim" aren't good thoughts. I can't stand the way people stereotype all Muslims as bad people after what happened on 9/11.

Anyway, don't care about what non-Muslims think. As long as you are pleasing God, you don't need to worry.

Young lady, I can help you with this question of yours. Most non-muslims know that the majority of Muslims are good people who unfortunately are in a bad position. Some muslims were born into Islam and can't leave- the consequences are rather severe for a person to leave Islam. Others are just brainwashed.

Anyway, that look of disgust you see is actually NOT against you. When they look at you they are thinking the MEN of Islam are scum. People view the Virgin Mary as making her own choice. Non muslims know that the muslimah are victims of Islam. Muslim Women are abused and degraded (the qur'an prescribes wife beating, that she is worth half a man, etc etc etc).

On top of that, Muslim women are brainswashed by the men to say that the forced covering makes them feel free and liberated and powerful and other bull**** like that.

So does that make sense? The look is not at you personally, it is what it stands for to non-muslims: oppression, slavery, abuse, degradation, humiliation.

I am sure you are a very sweet, kind hearted good person who is just in an unfortunate situation. But what can you do about it? To leave Islam means you will be disowned by your family and friends. Apostasy is generally considered to be sufficient for a death sentence in muslim countries where Sharia law is practiced.

Good luck to you.

It isn't so much being decent. I believe its a misunderstanding of what the veil represents to a Muslim woman. To Western women's eyes, it means oppression, mysogyny, slavery of the feminine. And when one encounters certain Muslim fundamentalists (the type who would kill their sister if a strange man looked at her, even if she didn't know it), it only backs up that illusion.

I don't know what you mean by "like I am scum." Personally, when I see a muslim woman in traditional dress, all I can think of is that she probably does not groom below the waist, which really grosses me out. Am I mistaken is thinking that Muslim women don't wax? BTW, I think the same thing looking at nuns.

This I don't get either.

It has nothing to do with decency however.

There is nothing indecent about the human body.

Its a trend your following just like many women don't go around without a shirt or bra on. The same thing.

Some people wear there hair long , some people cut it short.

Decent people of any race, color, or religion don't look down on anyone, including Muslim women.

they don't understand that if a woman choose to wear a hijab that she is doing it out of religion and so that men see the real her no just the body
