Although there is nothing in the Quran against dogs, there are many prophetic statements (Hadith) that ban Muslims from having dogs. Prophet Muhammed even ordered Muslism to kill dogs at a time but he stopped that later on.
Most today's scholar say that you are not allowed to keep a dog

Depends on who you speak to.
Fundamentalists say that you can have a dog if it is for a purpose...guard, working with animals, caring for the blind.
Liberals say go ahead, just keep the dog away from the living area because dogs are dirty.

Yes but dogs are considered impure only if the dog is wet or if your hand is wet. You would have to wash (I think its ghusul not sure though) whenever there is conatct and one of you is wet.
