The way that I like to make my Shepard's Pie is:
Vegetables (peas, carrots, corn...)
Brown gravy
Ground beef
Mashed potatoes (either homemade or out of box)
Cheese (Cheddar is best)
Seasoning (to your taste)
I brown the ground beef, add veggies, and season. When the veggies are cooked through, I add the brown gravy. If you use the boxed mashed potatoes (use when you're short on time), cook as directed on the box. In a baking dish pour the veggie meat and gravy mixture into the dish. Spread a thick layer of the mashed potatoes on top. Being that everything is already cooked and hot all you have to do now is put cheese on top and melt it. Now, you have a healthy, quick, and tastey meal.

Here's a very basic and easy version:
Brown ground beef (1-2 lbs/ I use 4 lbs for a family of 5).
Season to your liking.
Add brown gravy premixed with water (optional)
Put a layer of your choice of veggie like corn or none at all
Make a batch of mashed potatoes (instant will do and is quick)
Then layer the mashed potatoes over the hamburger mixture. Bake in oven until brown about 30 minutes. Baste w/butter or olive oil or veggie oil.
Allow to cool a bit before slicing into squares and serve with a tossed salad.

Brown some hamburger (about 1.5 to 2 pounds) with some chopped onion (1 large onion), can put chopped celery, carrots, mushrooms, green peas, and green peppers in too season with salt and pepper and a can of mushroom soup (undiluted) - let simmer covered for about 10 to 15 mins.
Mash some potatoes (about 5 large ones or 7 medium) with milk and cream or butter (you can put some green onion bits and or parsely in the mash)
Grease a casserole pan with butter and place the meat combination in the bottom. Top with the mashed potatoes and top that with grated yellow cheese. Bake for about 20 mins until the cheese is melted. (350)

Shepherd Pie Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
3 medium russet potatoes
salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 can (10 3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 teaspoon beef flavor concentrate or equivalent base or granules
2 cans (14 to 15 oz each) green beans, drained
shredded cheddar cheese, for topping
PREPARATION:
Spray crockpot with cooking spray. Scrub about 3 medium russet potatoes and cut into small chunks, leaving the skin on. (If you cut the spuds into too large a size pieces, they will take too long to cook since everything else is basically done.) This made one layer on the bottom of my 5-quart crockpot.Season spuds with salt, pepper and garlic powder to your own taste. Brown 1 pound of ground beef with 1/2 chopped onion, drain fat. Put on top of spuds. Mix one can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup with 1 tsp beef concentrate flavor. Drain two 14 or 15 ounce can of cut green beans and put in slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 3 hours, stirring a couple of times. Turn to low and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of shepherd pie and cook for 30 minutes or so.
Makes 4 servings

How many shepards do you know tend cows?? Shepards pie is made with lamb not beef. So whichever recipe you want to choose from above, substitute lamb for beef. Cottage pie is the beef version of shepards pie.
