It depends on what is causing it. Getting them to talk to you or to a professional is always best. Don't force them to talk if they are not ready because that can cause some to withdraw. Just give them space, but let them know that you are there to help them when they are wanting to talk.

Be there for him and comfort him, tell him how much you love him, assure him that you'll always be there no matter what. Don't make promises you may not keep, and be as honest as you can be for his own good.

Let them know that what they are feeling is normal and okay. Then be their for them for what ever they need. If they are sad hug them, if they are mad let them be mad, etc.
