That is the "check engine" light. When it illuminates, it means the PCM (powertrain control module) has detected something that has fallen outside of the parameters of what the vehicle is programmed to operate within. You would need to take it in to a mechanic with a scan tool to pull to codes, in order to determine the problem.

The on board computer is designed to let you know when there is a malfunction. This could be serious, and should be analyzed by a qualified technician. Some things you can do: Listen to the motor. Does it start and run OK. Check the fluids. Look for broken or frayed wires. Check electrical connections. Are they fastened securely, or corroded. WARNING: Turn off the engine. The cooling fan and belt can take off a finger. I suggest a reputable repair shop.

While recomended you don't have to go to a service station to have your Check Engine Light code pulled from the computer. Many auto parts stores such as autozone or advanced auto do offer free OBD-II code reading. If your car is a 1996 or later model vehicle it will be a OBD-II compliant vehicle. I'd have them scan the code and see what the computer is indicating before spending $20-$50 for a dealer or shop to scan it.
