I have a 7 month old yorkie who is housetraining horribly!!! She shows many many signs of disrespect and, I think, has partially established herself as the alpha dog in the house. I know I need to fix this problem asap. I just wanted to know if establishing myself as the alpha dog over her would help her housebreaking. Will it? Are there any things i should try?

Go back to the basics. Take the dog out every hour to the same spot and use a word or phrase like "be quick". When she goes give her a treat. If she messes in the house take her out right away to the spot and keep repeating. Don't use those so called training mats. They only train the dog that it's OK to go in the house. As for establishing yourself as the alpha...When the dog is calm, hold her gently by the muzzle while speaking in calm tones. This is a behavior exhibited by the bitc- while weaning. Also, speak firmly to the dog when punishment is necessary. Dogs recognize the difference in tone and will respond. Be consistent. Look for a trainer that uses behavioral methods. They work and are a are a lot less stressful on you and the dog. Contrary to the old saw, there is no dog too old to learn new tricks.

1. To coach to have excretory habits which are applicable for indoor living: housebreak a puppy. 2. To subdue; tame. Housebreaking is the approach of training a domesticated animal that lives with its human house owners in a condominium to pee outdoors, or in a detailed indoor discipline, rather than throughout the condo. The pet owner's desire is to interrupt the habit of taking away in the condominium, as a result the term. Condominium-training or sometimes even potty coaching are original synonyms for housebreaking. Not all types of animals may also be housebroken.

Smaller dogs tend to require more work to train, even for something that should be simple like potty training.
Try professional training if you have not.

If your dog doesn't listen to you, it's a huge problem. We brought our dog to puppy kindergarten and the teachers told us when the dogs misbehaves you need to grab them firmly by the scruff of the neck and firmly say no. Keep holding for 10-15 seconds. The dog will look scared and possibly whine, but it makes them realize that you are in control. This way when she does something wrong you can scold her. Just saying no doesn't impose any threat on the dog, so they don't take it seriously if you have never disciplined her. After this the dog will want to please you. It will suck up. When she goes potty outside make sure to praise her and give her a treat. This is let her know that doing that makes you happy, and she will keep doing it to please you. She will soon catch on that going inside results in scolding and going outside results in praise and a treat.

You want to make sure that your dog knows that you are the Alpha in the house and not her. There is a training method that you can try. It is called NILF Nothing in Life is Free. Here is a link with information on it.

you could try a doggie diaper. When she pees she will pee in the diaper instead of on your carpet. I trained my dogs this way (along with crate training) and they were house broken w/in a week.
