The history of a pit bull is a long history. They have been bred to do many different things, and it wasn't until more recently that people have been using them as fighting dogs. From what I have read about pit bulls they were originally bred as bull baiters, and a butchers helper, and as a family companion. Once people started fighting dogs their dog of choice was the pit bull because of it's strength and tenacity. And yes, some people do breed pit bulls specifically to be DOG aggressive and to fight in the ring. But not all pit bulls are bred for this purpose. I know of many pit bull breeders who breed family companions. And, this is a fact, people who do breed pit bulls to fight other dogs specifically breed dogs who are NOT human aggressive. Dog fighters did not want the dog to bite them when they had to break up a fight.
The American Pit Bull terrier is my favorite dog breed. I used to volunteer at an animal shelter, and I now work in a vet clinic, and I am a pit bull owner. I have seen many abused dogs who were used as a fighting dog. Even these dogs who have gone through so much are incredible sweet. While they are broken and bloody, the reach out to give you a kiss. I find them to be truly amazing animals. When people choose to have a pit bull as a pet they just have to do a lot of training and socialization from a young age. My pit bull loves all children, adults, dogs and cats. But while she is friendly to everyone, she is ALWAYS supervised, only because she is such a strong dog. I hope this helps.
These aren't the best websites for what you are looking for, but I like them:

www.southernpitbulls.com tells you a little. i would research olde english bulldogs. the dogs were used to to help butchers, the would attack the bull, grip down on its face until it died. people back then thought that bulls killed by olde english had the most tender meat. then as sport the would fight the dogs against bears, bulls and other large aggressive animals. they ended up outlawing bull baiting and supposedly the olde english went extinct. another great site is www.molosserdogs.com this site give the oldest history on these fighting dogs before they were even bred as olde english. pits are know for the aggression now days and people are trying to bring back the closest thing to the extinct olde english. a dog that will fight because of its loyalty to its owner not a dog that will fight just because it extinct like the pit.

You won't find any information on pit-bulls being bred to be aggressive AT ALL! Aggression is NOT something that is inherited it is something that is taught by the owner.
Fighting on the other hand you can look up in any pit-bull sight for it will give you a history of what they were bred for, Bull Baiting Bull Fighting as well as Dog Fighting, and Hunting.

it depends on what you mean by 'aggressive'. They were kept by sailors in the early days of this country and were used as fighting dogs. They were bred to be aggressive to other dogs (and win fights) NOT to be aggressive to people. These dogs were family dogs and aggression towards people was not tolerated.
It was only a hundred years later when this dog was introduced to the inner city juveniles who then used this dog not only in dog fights but also then bred them to guard houses and to be aggressive towards people. With this change, some lines of pit bulls were bred indiscriminantly for their aggression and any aggression whether against people or dogs was acceptable.
This would not be the case for most pit bulls who maintained their love of people and who were bred carefully for a quieter, calmer yet still brave and loyal dog.

Actually pit bulls arent aggressive it's the people who treat them in the manner to make them aggressive. Pit bulls are friendly when treated well by friendly people and environment. If you own one be mindful that once you set in an aggressive mentality you can't change the dog because they adapt to certain behaviors.

I'm with Be Happi.....
I have to pay an extreme amount of money for house insurance because my staffi/rotti cross is on the "BAD" list. How ironic though the Black Lab down the street chases my car , kids, and dogs, ect and it isn't a big deal. (my dogs are on a leash). There owners pay nothing for their nuisance dog.
AMAZING!

I AM GOING TO SAY THIS LOUDLY SO MAYBE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND.
PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE WHY RESPONSIBLE PIT OWNERS ARE LOOSING THEIR BELOVED ANIMALS. THEY ARE BANNING THEM LEFT AND RIGHT, BECAUSE OF MORONS LIKE YOU!!!
THEY ARE NOT MEANT TO BE ABUSED AND TORTURED AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING!
THEY CAN'T GET THESE STUPID PEOPLE OFF THE STREETS FAST ENOUGH, SO OUR DOGS AND OUR RIGHTS CAN BE PROTECTED.
