I have Bipolar and one of my most debilitating symptoms is my rapid speech. Whenever I open my mouth to talk, my brain gets over aroused. The longer I talk for, the faster my speech gets. Its sooooo frustrating and embarrassing because I have absolutely no control over it. I've had this problem since I first experienced my other extreme mood symptoms. I've tried EVERY relaxation technique known to man...honestly!! My doctor wants to give me Lithium but I don't want to end up like a zombie. Does anyone else have a problem like this or is it just me...???

You poor thing you! I dont really have an answer but maybe you should give the Lithium a go. Ive recently been prescribed Citalopram for depression, like you i really didnt want to go down that route but i have to say so far its working with no side effects. Tell the doctor your concerns maybe there is an alternate drug they could prescribe. Best of luck anyway!

I don't think there is a lot you can do unless you do give Lithium a try - speak to your mental health team/doctor about your concerns as lithium in correct dose should not make you "zombie" but should help with the manic symptoms such as "pressure of speech". Accepting you need constant medication and carrying on taking it can be the hardest battle, good luck.

Lithium, depending on the amount, shouldn't make you a zombie. Though it will kinda make you feel bland or mellow. You wont experience the severe mood changes.

I'm bipolar too and over the years I had to learn coping methods including taking my prescriptions. I'm also dyslexic so I have to stay on my toes when writing or even reading if I dont have it commited to memory.

Relaxation techniques wont work in your case as its brought on more by the disorder rather then stress of the situation.
