not sure in texas, but in most states the law isnt into effect if there was an already existing relationship before u turned 18 and i think the age 17 is considered legal with up to age 19 in some states.

No it is not illegal because you are within three years. I live in Texas as well and I'm a Criminal Justice major. So feel free to erm....do the do as they say. Just be careful.
