I would like to know everyones opinion on this. We are picking up the van tomorrow. The finance manager has been trying to talk my sister into getting it. It already has a 3/36 on it. I tried to tell my sister that they saw her coming and that she really doesnt need it. He told her she would go through her warranty in a year. Am I right?

Generally speaking extended warranties are a big profit item for dealers and not a good deal for the consumer. That's true with most products and equally true with automobiles. Toyota is well known for being a highly reliable vehicle. Don't waste your money. It's better spent on regular oil changes and tuneups which will do far more to prolong the life of your car.

Price is the biggest determing factor. Remember, you already have a manufacturer's warranty on the vehicle, I believe up to 50k on Toyota's that will cover any defect, especially powertrain items. These are the only items to concern yourself with, as they are the only big ticket things that can go wrong. If a light in your dash stops working at 90k, ask yourself if having a warranty you paid 2500 for was worth buying so that light will be fixed. Extended warranties overall are pretty much a waste of time for the average consumer. Take into account the mileage you drive, and the normal time you own a vehicle. If you are the type to buy a new car every 3 to 5 years, like the average consumer in America, don't go with a warranty, it simply is not worth the extra cost. If you are going to rack up mileage quickly, look into it, and shop around. The selling dealership is not the only place to buy a warranty. Shop the price just like when you bought the van. Good luck

I don't know exactly what are the promises that he made and you might be right to a certain degree. We all know not to believe a sales man and buying the extended warranty might be a good idea. I said that because, although Toyota has a good reputation and doesn't break down often, you might need it just in case the car end up having a manufacture defect. Also, go to another dealer and ask information on the same car with the answers from the first dealer being your question to see who's lying and whatever you do, don't tell him that you've already spoken to another dealer.
good luck on your new car.

Remember that the older a car gets the more likely you are to start having problems and that cars are large expenses, so yes extended warranties on such items are a good investment.
