when i broke up with my long distance ex, i didn't talk to my ex anymore... his friend (whom i barely know and have met only twice) starts messaging me and talking to me on msn suddenly about my relationship with my ex and my status now... is it my ex using his friend's account or is it really his friend?

It's your ex's friend speaking to you on behalf of your ex.
He's your ex for a reason, there is no reason why he (the friend or ex) needs to know your relationship status. But if you want to spice up the drama, tell him you're dating someone.
Assuming this long distance relationship comes from a relationship in real life not some pathetic online romance, if your ex really cared about you and wanted to be with you, he'd move to where you are and try to make it work.
It's definitely not a good sign that he's resorted to middle school tactics and is having his friend check up on you.

The only way to is to ask a question that only you and your ex will know the answer to. If you are subtle enough in your questioning your ex won't recognize it as a trick question. If he answers you know it is the ex....

Well if you question it, stop talking to him. Obviously there are trust issues here. Besides if his friend is talking to you, which happens all the time when relationships end, then he isn't much of a friend is he? Just stop talking to him.

I think your ex friend (with your ex) are messaging you to see what you do and what you say....
Stop talk to them, 'cause they can be a problem in the future...
