I know not so much financially i am talking emotionally fullfilling. Do you get satisfaction or does it feel like you have your thumb on the hole in the dam?

It's amusing to see how some look for this type question in order to voice their opinions...and in some cases....to show ignorance!

I was not beat up in school, never been a bully, and care alot for doing something with my life that has the ability to help others.

Some do benefits to help others, some put extra money in the collection plate at church, some become firefighters, some become police officers.

After working in law enforcement for over 30 years, there is no doubt that in that time, I've helped thousands of people who needed and asked for help.

Yes ... I've put people in jail even though that is the part of the job I DON'T like doing. But, in doing so, I know that it is because of their own actions that put them there...not mine.

Those that are "anti-police" either have an affliction against somebody of authority or possibly because they've had a bad influence from the police. I cannot answer for all in the profession other than the majority of which are good people doing the same profession for the same reason...to help others in need.

There are young wet behind the ear rookies that will learn one day that it isn't all about power...but restraint, wisdom, knowledge of people, and enjoying the fact that when you go home, you've done several good deeds to help others.

To those who "nay-say," I suggest you look at their motives for being that way.

For those who've had bad interactions with police, I suggest that we all have bad days and maybe the officer wasn't as professional as they should have been...that's no excuse...but a point that we ARE human...just like everyone else!

It does feel like you're attempting to plug a dam with a finger...yes. But, at least I know I write my congressional leadership and legislators to tell them how things are in the "trenches" and my opinion of how things could improve. In other words, I don't sit on my rump complaining....I do SOMEthing to make this a better place for everybody to live.

There are two types of people in the world...those who abide by the rules of society and those who don't. The majority are those who go with the established rules imposed by society. By the way....police don't make the laws...they enforce those laws established by society. If you want to complain to somebody...complain to the law makers.

I sleep very well at night knowing I've helped my community to be a better place for those who wish to live in a safe environment and raise their families there....and because I don't have to look over my shoulder wondering when the law is going to come after me for breaking the rules.

Best wishes!

^Amen brother!

As for the job being rewarding, ABSOLUTELY! Most people go their whole lives not finding a job that is fullfilling or making a difference in the world. Being able to do something right and help others is the best feeling in the world. Getting paid to do it makes it that better.

Alot does depend on pay. Cops who are paid better, preform better. The dangers and demands of the job are high. Most cops on the east coast make an average wage, but there are departments out there who pay very high.

I don't think the idea of putting your finger in a dam is the right way to look at things. And most cops don't look at it negatively. Everyone makes a difference, and at the end of our lives what will we have to look back on? Did we make an impact or did we just do nothing? Even changing just one person's life during our whole time here, is enough satisfaction, doing it for a living is by no question the best job. Not most people working dead-end jobs, or minimum wage jobs can say their job is that important, or what I did today will change the world. That is the reason for going on with the job even though everything around appears downhill.

Some officers choose to do wrong and that is a bad apple, there are idiots in all professions, but they certainly don't last long.

It would be very hard to feel satisfied after a day in a cops life IMO..It really depends on how you view things and if you agree with the law system our country has. If you don't see any issues then you probably will like the job..But, imagine doing a job where you have to contradict yourself. That's not right..at all. I have met cops who say that marijuana should be legal, yet they still go out doing their job arresting those same people smoking. I realize cops cannot change laws, but WHY would you do a job where you have to go against your own beliefs.. In the end, you will have to decide. Cops need to realize their real priorities and stop being smart asses for the fun of it and to people who don't deserve it. People say not to judge, but the truth is there are a lot of cops who abuse their authority. The authority which should be equivalent to 20 years of training and yet the time it takes to become a cop is appalling for the power they have over society. Have fun with whatever you decide. The way people view cops is constantly lowering, and for a good reason.

^Amen brother! As for the job being priceless, truthfully! maximum persons bypass their comprehensive lives no longer looking a job it somewhat is fullfilling or making a distinction in the international. with the flexibility to do something actual and help others is the ideal feeling in the international. Getting paid to do it makes it that extra ideal. Alot does matter on pay. law enforcement officials who're paid extra ideal, preform extra ideal. the hazards and demands of the job are extreme. maximum law enforcement officials on the east coast make an user-friendly salary, yet there are departments accessible who pay very extreme. i do no longer think of the assumption of putting your finger in a dam is the ideal thank you to examine issues. And maximum law enforcement officials do no longer inspect it negatively. anybody makes a distinction, and on the top of our lives what do we would desire to look lower back on? Did we make an impact or did we do purely no longer something? Even changing only one individual's existence for the time of our comprehensive time right here, is sufficient delight, doing it for a residing is via no question the ideal job. no longer maximum persons working ineffective-end jobs, or minimum salary jobs can say their job is that significant, or what I did immediately will exchange the international. that's the reason for occurring with the job even although each little thing around seems downhill. some officers pick to do incorrect and that's a bad apple, there are idiots in all professions, yet they truthfully do no longer final long.

At times yeah...it's rewarding. I can count the times on one hand too. Don't expect to get into this field and be loved and admired. You aren't. Remember...for the most part the large majority of people you'll be dealing with are the dregs of society.
Actually I feel great when one sh*thead guns another one down and the shooter gets arrested, Why? Because two losers have been eliminated in one fell swoop. One in what I like to term as a "public service killing" and the other guy...I like shaking his hand and telling him he did a swell job for all citizens here...plus he's out of the picture for the next 25 years or so as well. So he may as well be dead. And me? Why...it's a lovely sacrifice to the overtime gods, who make my paycheck fatter. Thank you criminals of the world. You make my job worthwhile. Now THATS rewarding!!!!

The truth is that you are the only one who will be able to decide if it is rewarding for you or not. We don't do the job because of the pay. Yes, cards are stacked against us but it only takes the very few "thank yous" that keep you going everyday. it is true, nobody likes police until they need them. but thats ok, as long as you can make the difference to one individual one day at a time.

It certainly doesn't pay what it's worth. Most officers feel like they are making a difference, although in reality the cards are stacked against them. Take one mope off the street and three more will appear.

Understand this...YOU WILL CHANGE!! You will become like ever other cop, you will begin to spend your time with cops, you will begin to think every citizen is a criminal and you have power over all. You will get a short hair cut, buy big sunglasses, etc. etc. etc.

If you have a tiny ego or a huge ego it is a viable career choice. Those with a tiny ego get a huge boost, those with a huge ego they receive fuel for their ego.

My friend told me he really wanted to become a cop to legally beat people up and receive the benefits of being an officer IE double limo tint windows on personal cars, 14" barrels for shotguns, complete protection for committing minor crimes.

Understand you will be dealing with stupid people in general, so eventually you will receive a false idea that you are smarter than most.
