it could have been avoided on several occasions.
First was at the Versaile Peace Conference in 1919. If we'd allowed Germany some dignity, worked harder on reconcilliation rather then humilation, if we had offered to help rebuild rather than demand repairations (as Wilson advocated), then it would have been unlikely that Hitler would have come to power.
Another chance was in 1936, Hitler reoccupied the Rhineland, contrary to the Treaty. If the French has marched then, as Hitler admitted, he would have been ruined. Even if they had bluffed, the germans would have folded.
If UK and France had stood up to Hitler over many of the violations of the Treaty, WW2 could have been avoided.
Next was Chamberlain and Munich, when the Western Allies finnally prooved to Hitler, that they didn't have the stomach for a fight, and this encouraged Hitler to carry on throwing his weight around until it became intolerable

Yes, it could have been avoided after 1935 but only by appeasing the Nazi's and they wanted to occupy all of western Europe and eleminate all sociably undesirables, (Handicapped, Jews, Gypsies and the Mentally ill). Appeasment was not an option as Chamberlain found out.
Could it have been avoided before 1935? Yes probably. the main cause of the war was the rise of Hitler. If the Allies from WW1 hadn't bankrupted the German economy with high compensation claims and set up the weimar republic which ended up with such a rate of inflation that the price of bread went from 1 mark to 1 Million Marks in a year. When a people are driven to the point of desperation it is easy for fanatics to be taken seriously. the easiest way to avoid a tyrant is not to give him the opportunity to rise to power. Know this is a bit short... Regards delboyir@yahoo.com

World War 2, could not be avoided. Hitler was killing innocent people and invading other countries. They went into Norway and many other countries. In Norway they were brutal as in other place. The Jewish People were being murdered , with no Mercy from Hitler and his gestapo. Even the German People were against what Hitler was doing. They struggled to help the innocent Jewish Children and families. Hitler , invaded Poland, Austria, Russia, London, and had plans to take over the entire world. The only way it could have been avoided is to eliminate Hitler Do not compare the United States to Hitler, because there is no Comparison. So if this is your mission, I will tell you, your off the track.

1. They could have avoided the worst parts of the Versailles Treaty including the impossible war reparations and loss of territory imposed on Germany. It made Hitler possible.
2. US should not have entered World War One. It would have forced the European belligerents to find an equitable peace on their own in 1918. Versailles was inequitable and gave Europe a false sense of peace and security. It fell apart as Europe fell into an economic depression due to the devaluation of the German mark. The resulting politcal chaos was rife for exploitation by extremists from the left and right.

WW2 was a result of the crippling sanctions, Woodrow Wilson signed up during the Peace thready of Versailles in 1919, such humiliating Economically the then most advanced economical nation on earth, Germany. by 1929, with 50% unemployment, rampant inflation and people dying of hunger, Germany was open to the suggestive powers of a Nazi Party. Still, if the USA wouldn't have first supported Hitler, before he got out of control, the War would have never happened. (Deja Vu - Iraq-Sadam, Iran-Khomeini, Afghanistan-Osama, ring a bell) Every American President loves a good war, if its somewhere else.

WW11 was necessary to help the US with our sagging economy. Unemployment was high, people had a hard time taking care of their families. It was also necessary in order to keep Germany from defeating England. Being attacked by Japan was well orginized effort that became the catalyst for us getting involved. Without our help Germany would have been defeated but only after many more years than it actually took.

It became necessary after Germany had invaded so many countries and Japan had invaded China, indo China and Korea, then attacked the USA.
Germany's starting the European conflict could have been averted. The Allies demands and the treaties the Germans were made to sign after WWI led up to such poverty in Germany it allowed Hitler to rise to power.

The war was necessary because the enemy would not relent. Choices were oppression and Genocide or war and a hope for peace. Some anti-war people think all war is useless. This War proves otherwise. Even the Vatican recognizes States legitimate use of War.

If Hitler wouldnt have taken control of Germany, Mussolini not taking Italy, and the Militarialist running Japan.
And to be more specific, what could have kept the US out of the War...If Germany would have stopped invading after they took continental Europe, and obviously if the Japaneese didnt bomb the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor.

the crux of the matter rests with a couple of points, first the terrible concequences of the Holocaust finally gave the imputus for the Jews to set up Isreal, second operation Barbarossa the attack on Russia, in some ways this has now been proved to have stopped Stalin and his ideas of attacking western europe and making us all communists.
Yes WW11 could never have been stopped from the end of WW1 it was on its way and it was either Hitler we fought or Stalin.
