I think the best place to get any pet is a shelter. Why not give an abandoned animal a loving home, rather than encourage the irresponsible greediness of breeders by giving them your business?
Also, sometimes the larger pet stores such as PetsMart or PetCo have sidewalk adoption days. You might ask at these stores, too, for good references for adopting. They are both admirably committed to a no-breeder policy.
Good luck!

almost every community has a shelter. Each year thousands of cats are given up for one lame reason or another. The Humane Society is close by most major cities as well and have many beautiful animals to adopt.
I have always adopted pets and never gotten a "bad" one. These animals know you have saved them and always seem so happy to repay you with love. Last June my boyfriend and I went to the shelter and he bonded with a beautiful pure white cat. We didn't care what kind of cat we got only that it would interact with us and be part of the family. Turns out she is a pure bred turkish angora. Too bad labels are wasted on us. But she is so much fun and has the funniest personality.
Go to a shelter and allow enough time to visit with lots of the cats, the one you are meant to have will want to be near you and will give you a sign Good luck.

The absolute best place to get a cat is your local Humane Society. These animals are foten abandoned and are in the most need. They make excellent pets. Other animal shelters are a good place too, but they might not have the same credibility when it comes to vaccines and the health history of a potential adopted pet.

I would have to agree with the above statement that you should go to an animal shelter, though I suggest only going to a no-kill animal shelter. Take an extra bag of cat food with you to help their cause of feeding the animals they have. Plus, you can spend time with the animal first, to get to know it. You may even want to get an older cat instead of a kitten and the shelter is a great place to find a great companion.

Go to the humane society. You'll get a cat for cheap and you'll be rescuing it! Or, if you want a very young kitten you can look in the classified section of your local newspaper - there's almost always someone advertising free cats from a litter.

Call your local vet they sometimes know of cats that are looking for homes. Also go to your local shelter. They will give the kitty all of its shots and spay/neuter for a small price. I paid $65 for each of my cats. Don't go to a pet store. The animals there are often overbred and sickly. They charge an arm and a leg for an animal that will probably die sson after you bring it home.

absolutely go to your local humane society or another animal rescue group. there are so many lovely cats out there that need good homes and the ones who have been in a shelter are so loving because they know what it is like not to be wanted.

I agree with everyone else...an animal shelter but be careful as these cats may have socialization problems. Try and get a kitten from someone you know that just had litter

Please get your cat from your local animal shelter and save it from distruction. You can also go to PetSmart who has older and more tame cats that you can adopt. Usually, the previous owners moved and could not take them along.
