Test a small area of your carpet with hydrogen peroxide, to make certain it is color-fast. If it is, mix a cup of household hydrogen peroxide with 2 Tablespoons of baking soda and a couple of drops of dish soap. Use while foamy, and allow to sit for several minutes. Soak up and then put baking soda on the wet area and leave until dry..then vacuum.
Or you can find enzyme cleaners at your local pet supply, or Oxi-clean or Oxi-orange.

This is simple, all you need to do is buy pet resolve, pine sol, and borrow or rent a carpet cleaner if you do not have one. You may also want to get a powder that you vacum up from your floor in the scent that you want it. Okay first sprinkle the powder on the floor and vacum it up. Second mix the pet resolve, pine sol, and scortching hott water, together and put into the carpet cleaner, clean until all of the water is GONE!! repeat one more time. when this dries, I would advise step one again and ta da, brand new carpet smell with no hint of dog urine, especially if it was strong before, you will not smell it at all anymore!!

Everyone is giving good answers but I figured I'd add this.

Make sure you soak up as much of the pee as you can with a paper towel (so you can see when you've blotted most of the moisture out). Then treat it with the smell reducing products. That way your not mixing cleaning agents with the urine that's still in the carpet pad. The smell will keep coming back if you don't bloat out the urine.

Hope this helps.

You can purchase a product called Urine-B-Gone. You can find it at any pet store. The good thing about it is not only does it get the smell and stain out, but it also get rid of the smell so your dog does not pee in the same spot again.

When we bought our first house we had to shampoo the carpets (Be sure to buy the pet odor kind) and leave the windows open to air out the place. Once when I was little, one of our homes smelled so bad of cat urine that we had no choice, but to put in new carpet....good luck!!!!

Nature's Miracle. Clean up the urine then pour some N.M on there, let it sit for 5 mins then sop it back up with a cloth. Works like a charm!

Get a Bissel Spot Bot. They are awesome and can pull things out of a carpet that have been there for a very long time.

Yes. There is a product called Urine-off that works very very well. I get it from my vet but you can also get it on-line. It is better than anything from the pet store or supermarket. None of the those products, including Nature's Miracle quite cut it.

A good professional carpet cleaner would do it for you, however they charge a lot of money!!!
If you want to do it by yourself then you'll have to use something that camouflages the smell, like Bonaire ambient products, choose vanilla or something floral.

Get this stuff at the pet store (Pet Smart has it) called Nature's Miracle. The best stuff I've found for any kind of biological mess. Follow the instructions.
