King Offa was a king of Mercia in England from 757 until 796. The suggestion that he became muslim stems from the existence of a gold coin minted by Offa with an Arabic inscription. The coin is, in fact, a copy of an Arabic dinar. However, the Arabic inscription is only a copy and not a very good one - it is upside down. The speculation is that the coin was meant to be used for trade with the Arabs. At that time, gold was not used for coins in England but it was common in the Arab world.
