we are planning to change the location of the entryway into our living room and other that just removing the drywall, how hard is it to frame out the opening. Is this something that other new to home remodelers can do or should a professional do this?

It's not a difficult job, however a professional should do it. The tricky part would be piping and wiring running through the wall, if you have none of that..it's a piece of cake.

First, remove the plaster from one side to see what lies undernearth. If there is plumbing or electrical to move and you are not good at that, call in professionals. If there is nothing in the way, you need to remove at least one stud and then build a header to take the load the stud used to hold. If any or all of this does not make sense to you or makes you nervous, call a carpenter. Once you get the header in place, you can frame out the rest of the door and install the door jamb.

Not too difficult. Have sledgehammer, will travel.
Just make sure you don't knock out a support beam, or you will be in big trouble. If you don't know if a beam is a support beam, hire a professional or someone in the know to look at it.
