If we are away over night and then away for three days, do they know the difference?

Dogs are always in the moment.
They don't know if it is one day or ten.
They just know they miss you.

Our dog absolutely adores my husband. I can be home with her all day, and nothing, but about 10-15 minutes before he usually gets home, she perks up and starts waiting for him. She's blind now, but when it was about time, she'd go to the front window and watch for him. Now she goes to the garage door and waits. One weekend when he had to be away I made the mistake of asking her "Where's Daddy?" She sat at the window for the rest of the weekend!

They do on some level. They understand when the routine has been broken - when dinner is late or when owners don't come home on time. Whether they perceive the passage of time as we do is probably a subject of debate.

I heard there memory lasts only 3 days. So, if you went away for more than 3 days they would forget you. Or something like that. But, my mother disagrees with me. She says they never forget.

they probably dont count but know they were gone for 3 sun ups and sun sets. They do retain for a certian amount of time and dont easily forget things, as for keeping a black book of dates and times I dont think it matters to them much.
